Another option is the paint effect. Draw a black rectangle covering the entire screen. Then draw a circle on top of the rectangle and set the mode to 'erase'. Feather the edges of the circle.

Has the problem been happening for a while, or is it new? I ask because Media Composer 2021.9 is only qualified up to MacOS 11.5.x. Perhaps a Mac person will come along and let us know if they're using 11.6.1 without any trouble and we can look at some other possibility.
