I think read access for any user is the default setup. reading about the behavior you see I honestly do not know what the read checkbox does under inventory as it was obviously never ever needed to block a user at any of our customers from seeing the content of an airspeed. Interesting to see what it actually does.

On airspeed you can control user access rights per channel for rec, play + the inventory, read, modify, delete + ftp access. Have you checked the user you use in remote console to connect to the airspeed?
