Update: I solved the issue... sorta' It appears the sequence was corrupted.... I opened a new sequence... closed AVID then opened Avid and all is fine in terms of opening the project... unfortunately, the sequence with the work is corrupted... appears the work is lost for that sequence... Is this when I go to the attic to find a replacement for

If I read your post correctly... to change the project format setting... go to the project window (ctl f9 - windows) and click the Format tab.. change the project type using the drop down menu in the Project Type:
