    Is Avid MC x64 bit?

I'm confused, based on my tech knoledge Avid MC is a x64 bit app, it has a x64bit version that requires x64bit OS, but for whatever reason the people I talk to seem certain that it isn't.  Is it x64 without really being x64? Curious from both a mac and pc perspective.

Re: Is Avid MC x64 bit?

The current version of Media Composer (and NewsCutter and Symphony) is a 32-bit application. It will run on a 64-bit OS, such as Windows Vista or Windows 7.

I think it's not speculation and has been stated on these forums that the next version MC v6, will be 64 bit.  If I'm wrong, I'm sure we'll find out soon enough.

Let me clear things up. No, that is not what has been stated. Avid's official statement is "MC Version 5 is the last version that will be supported on a 32 bit OS". At no time has Avid issued an official statement that unequivocably, the next version will be a 64 bit based application. Whether it will be or not we will all just have to wait and see.

However I will echo his message and say that at no time has Avid ever said that the next version will be 64bit.
It has clearly stated that it will not be 32bit.

There is a difference - even though conclusions can be drawn.......

That is indeed true. My point is just that Avid has not made any definitive official announcement other than the one I have previously stated.

Avid has said that 5 is the last release that will be supported on a 32 bit OS. To date, they have issued no other official statement on the subject, nor have they clarified what they mean by the existing statement, which is, in my opinion, vague and encourages speculation.

Re: Is Avid MC x64 bit?

What that statement has allowed is the release of 5.5 as a full 32-bit version, even though it's identified as a point release.  Who knows how many such "point releases" there will be before any 64-bit version comes out?

Another possibility that such a statement leaves open is that any 64-bit product could have an entirely new name, or a completely different version numbering system.

I'm not saying that any of those scenarios is likely, but by phrasing the statement that way Avid have kept their options wide open.

Re: Is Avid MC x64 bit?

If you are referring to the "Q4/2011?" - 64bit near the end of the article

I would point out the "?" That would mean "speculation" as to what was coming . . .  not a fact.

Also this is from Wiki - Is this an official Avid document? I very much doubt it.

I have learned to take everything I read on the net, including Wiki, with a grain of salt. I always check for other takes on important statements and try and find the one that is most likely true. (not always an easy task)

I think that the original post at the start of this thread has been clearly answered by Larry, and that it may now sink slowly into the depths of the Forum . . . .  no need to drag it out. Geeked

Re: Is Avid MC x64 bit?

It's interesting to see the desire and questions from the user base and the official responses from Avid.

It's also interesting to see the advocates on the forum doing their best to clarify without overstepping.

I can quite understand the need for holding ones cards close to ones chest but it does seem odd to not respond to such a simple question as will the next release be 64bit?

Ok we know it's not going to be 32bit and we could assume or speculate that it's going to be 64bit (I mean what else could it be really?) and the value to Avid of not clarifying that is?

I could understand not being drawn on queries like "will we have background rendering" and "background importing and exporting" as these are key features. But the bit depth of the next version needing to be kept under wraps?

Seems to me that a statement that could have clearly stated the position has left a confusion that is just wasting effort on everyones part and frustrating the user-base.

At a time when confidence is in flux over Apples treatment of it's user base Avid have an opportunity to show they are different.

This is potentially an exciting opportunity for Avid. And it's exciting to be part of it and I'd dearly love to see more involvement with the userbase to ensure the ongoing developments reflect the real needs of a market sector currently in limbo by Apples latest release. An official clarification on the 64bit or not question would be a helpful step in that direction.

I think we are just seeing another example Avid using its very strict interpretation of the securities law as it relates to releasing information about upcoming revenue generating products.

I honestly don't think that Avid is trying to be cute here or leave its options open for who knows what. They are probably just saying what they believe they can get away with while still staying well w/in the law. B/c they are commenting about a current product (MC 5) not an new one whose release is pending.

I think we ARE supposed to read between the lines and conclude what Avid feels it can't say outright. Is this speculation about speculation? LOL!
