Dear Forum.
Have been working with Avid MC vMC 5.5.1 no problems, works beatuifully.Today, June 3, 2011 I upgraded using the PATCH to Avid MC v5.5.2. I use WIN XP SP3, HP 8400xp workstation, 4gb ram and Nvidia 3500. Now, everytime I start Media Composer v5.5.2 it locks up with a warning about PLutil not responding.The no way to shut Avid down normally so I have to use Windows Task Manager. I am at a loss as to what the heck to do to fix this problem. What is PLutil? Why is it locking up AVID?Does know how to fix or know where to look to find the answer?Has anyone else had this problem? Do a search into your bootdrive for a folder named pixie and rename it to pixieold or something similar

If I am not mistaken this was a registration problem that occured when upgrading to 5.5.x and if it was the problem it most likely would have shown up when he went to 5.5.1. If he renames the Pixie folder now he will mess up his registration...
I could be wrong about this though. :-)

OK, I was thinking of a different situation then. I was right and was wrong as I thought I might be. The difference between 5,51 and 5,52 is that a 30 days trial of Phrasefind and Scriptsync are included into 5,52.
As both of them are software licensed that licensing, no matter if it is activated or not, will create a conflict with earlier Pinnacle / Avid Pixie activations no matter if you use a dongle or not.
I just rename my old pixie folder, it´s a pity however to not have the ability to have several applications opened up at the same time.
Agree Tomas and we are workign on correcting that. For now you need to either rename or use different boot disks.
Still not quite sure what jc1148 is experiencing but I would call support as you can do so free with installation and activate issues. Check the support and services page for #'s to call depending on your location.

It is only one file in the pixie folder (items.pi2) that causes the problem. I have moved this file to a digfferent location for backup, and all works fine - even my Avid Liquid software on the same system does not complain.

5.5.2 is EXCELLENT John, it just does not play nice on the same system as Liquid. If you "need" or want Liquid then you might check around to see how people are getting them to play nice before going to 5.5.2. I just deleted my Liquid and have not looked back. :-)
I primarily shoot HDV @ 30F, sometimes using Footage from the Canon 60D. 5.5 plays nice with these mixed sources?
I did this weekend an upgrade from 5.03 to 5.53
Deactivate and uninstal 5.03
Install 5.53. and MC came up with "Plutil application has stopped working"

MC 5.53 still craching at startup. Same Plutil crach as prwevius message.
Did install W7 SP1 and had no result
Only MC is installed.
Crachreport of MC will give me the message,

Never have MC 5.53 working Got no ideas enymore.
If I reinstal MC5.03 everything works.
Someone any ideas what couses the problem?

The error iis caused by a conflict with the licensing files and the pixie tool. If the license files were deleted, you can try to delete the folder altogether and see if by doing this it solves the issue.
You can also try to use ccleaner (if on PC) to clear up the registry entries if you havent done that already.

Did follow the instructions of the Pixie removal tool 288459
Run -RegDelete_14.exe-
1e clean "all products"
2e clean "user registration and activation data"
Install 5.53 and activation done, without any problem.
