How do I convert HD to SD 4:3

    Hi

I have some P2 1080HD clips that need to be converted to 4:3 SD

All clips has 4:3 "safty" so nothing important will be lost.

Re: How do I convert HD to SD 4:3

just open them in a 4x3 project, apply a pan&scan reformat effect (16:9 anamorphic source-4:3 destination). Or create a 1080 project, do all your editing (so graphics, titles, FX are created HD) then downconvert finished timeline. Just changing the format tab does the trick for preview/roll out, although I (and a few other users posting on the forum) thinks that process "softens" the SD version. My favorite workflow is export a QTref of the HD timeline to the desktop, then import that into an4X3 project at 1:1.

    good luck

Re: How do I convert HD to SD 4:3

I just tried this  on a 1080 p2 hd project and it does look better but it is still a bit washed out but I dont know if it's because I am compairing it to the hd or not if I create a spot in sd  it seems to be sharper that anything I down convert is there a way to get a crisp downconvert ?

Re: How do I convert HD to SD 4:3

the washed out look might be a rgb/709/601 kerfluffel, just make sure what you export from HD is the same setting used for import to an SD project. Don't disagree that most downconverts look a touch "soft", think that's the nature of the beast. You're starting with more shading, more/smaller pixels so smoother curves and finer lines in the frame, interpolated to fill the chunkier pixels of SD. With native SD each pixel is nicely filled in from from frame to frame, so even though less detail available, what's there is cleaner , and that can read as "sharper". I had one client who insisted on a sharpening filter being applied and cranked up to the point where it ended up looking like an SD clip (more peaking, sharper edges, a lot less detail) I've also tried running a QT ref through Sorenson, Tmpeg, Procoder. Couldn't see any discernable differences from the direct import workflow.
