I was given media shot with a Canon XH A1 then loaded onto a 1TB LaCie drive with a MAC computer. I'm working with Avid MC 5.0.3 on a laptop PC, and was able to link the files with AMA immediately (I have MacDrive on my PC). Problem is, video doesn't play smoothly. My project settings are 1080p/29.97 Ycbcr 709 1920x1080. My PC does not have Firewire 800. I do have a small Firewire 400 port (I go Firewire 800 out of my GTech drives, Firewire 400 into the computer for my other projects). I linked using the USB cable. If I import the video onto my desktop, it plays fine - but once I go to my external GTech it's unusable. How should I adjust my settings to get smooth video? I tried to transcode (too laborious for all the media I'm about to get) - and it played smoothly, but out of sync.
First of all XH A1 is HDV.
You need an HDV project (1440x1080) and not p but i.
AMA HDV?
You need to import that footage in a HDV project.
What type is the footage?
When I work on the laptop I use only e-SATA for editing.

The cameraman put the video (interview) on a new small LaCie 1TB drive that has no e-SATA out
Rigth click on the files and transcode them to DNxHD 36.
It's even better than HDV but this will be a Full raster (1920x1080).
Or you can go up to DNxHD TR-120 but I am not sure your USB drive will follow.
