Is there a way to create a slide projector type of transition between a series of stills? 

The push left and push right effects will give you something close, with a thick vertical bar between frames, like an old fashioned slide projector (non-carousel). Equally important is a good ka-chuck, ka-chuck sound effect to go with it.
