EditShare announces first ever Lightworks Open Source platform

In more news from NAB, has anyone else seen this?

Amongst the obvious open source strengths and weaknesses, Editshare "plans to make the first step towards releasing Lightworks Open Source in Q3 of this year in the form of a free Lightworks download".

This release offers "true shared projects, instant save, multi-cam ingest, 3D editorial functionality, Universal Media File support, native RED editing, native 2K support with DPX and RED, dual outputs, and a format-independent timeline."

Editshare further claims that "Lightworks achieves a level of unsurpassed interoperability by offering seamless media exchange between Avid and Final Cut Pro editing applications. The new workflow lets Lightworks users collaboratively edit projects with a much wider group of users".

Intriguing, no?  (My boldfacing, by the way).

Re: EditShare announces first ever Lightworks Open Source platform

I started on Lightworks as an assistant.  Everyone hepas praise on the intuitiveness of FCP, but Lightworks is truly the most intuitive editing software I've ever used.  I looked into the software only version of it, but it's priced way to high for me.  Hopefully that will change, as I wouldn't mind having three NLEs to choose from for projects.

It actually bought me back to editing after a ten year hiatus.

No argument here.  It's the operationally the fastest NLE I've ever used.

Same here, very fast editing on a 486 pentium.

For drama it was a joy to use.

So can anyone just download it now and use it for free or do you need to be a developer?

As I understand it, it will be available in Q3 in a usable form other than just the source code. I say this because they say people will be able to get to grips with the Lightworks interface etc...

Their product line-up PDF mentions it being "Free for everyone" so I'm guessing that means everyone. Big Smile

I'll just add what it is that I quite like the sound of (having never used it before):

    • Resolution independent editing.
    • Impressive format/codec support including DNxHD, Prores and RED.
    • Real-time scopes and waveforms.
    • Secondary colour correction.
    • Subframe audio adjustment.
    • Unlimited multicamera sources.
    • Node-based layer tool for effects.

I'm thinking of heading back to studies just around the time this is supposed to be released for free. That's gonna be VERY cost effective, since I would normally just splash out for MC 5.0 Academic instead. Those saved pennies would certainly help. Big Smile

What about this Lightworks NLE (soon to be open source)?

I was doing some cursory look at LightWorks editing application...

...and, notice it seems to have a VERY fluid and user friendly user interface... not to mention a few very important aspects of editing that AVID (...and any other NLE that I know of...) seems to miss.

    But..

The important part is that it going open source by the end of this month...

And... from I can see... that could be a bit of thorn in the side of a lot of NLE's.

Anyone with some experience regarding LightWorks...?   I would like to hear their take on this editing application.

Re: What about this Lightworks NLE (soon to be open source)?

I love the Lightwork interface and plan on running a project thru it as soon as I get it set up at the end of the month.  However, it's not free to everyone just yet.  According to the email I recieved, of the 20 thousand people who signed up to be beta testers, only 1700 or so were accepted.  The download that becomes available at the end of the month is only for people who signed up to be beta testers but were not accepted.  If you didn't sign up, it could very well be NAB time before you can get it.

If Lightworks doesn't get you excited, have a look at this:

Read the small print; this is an NLE, it even supports Avid /Euphonix hardware.

Re: What about this Lightworks NLE (soon to be open source)?

What I noticed was their hardware requirements:

    • A PC computer with Intel Core Duo, Intel Xeon, or AMD processor
    • 2 GB of RAM (3GB recommended)
    • A PCI Express graphics card with 256MB memory or higher
    • A display with 1024 x 768 resolution or higher (1440 x 900 or higher recommended)
    • Windows XP Professional SP2 or Windows 7 (32 bit or 64bit)
    • QuickTime 7.6.6 or later
    • 100 MB of disk space required to install Lightworks
    • Dedicated media hard drive (7200rpm or higher)

So that's 2 GB of RAM, relaxed CPU requirements, relaxed GPU needs, relaxed OS specification, and a range of versions of QT.  Interesting.

The most interesting thing is that it needs 100MB for installation.

And no more this or that GPU to work. The fastest the GPU the better.
