    Slipping and sliding noob question

Hi I'm relatively new to Avid. I'm loving it but one thing I find very frustrating is this:

    (working example)

    1. I have 3 video tracks and 2 audio tracks on my timeline.

    2. I decide to trim the the first clip on V1, but I want to leave all of the other clips in their same positions on

    v2, v3 etc.

    3. I realise that trimming the first clip on v1 will shift all of the clips on the v1 track forward or backward.

    4. However, whenever I trim a clip either forward or backward on v1 I move all of the clips on the other tracks

which knocks everything out of sync.

I've viewed multiple tutorials on trimming and none of them addresses this issue.'

Re: Slipping and sliding noob question

Based on your example given, this is very simple... unless I'm misunderstanding you.

Select only the track you need to trim. Provided you need to maintain sync for all the tracks, use "double roller" mode. Everything stays in sync!

Sorry, on closer inspection, I noticed that the double roller affects both the A clip and the B clip. What if I just wanted to take the tail off the A clip, leaving the B clip how it is... while at the same time not altering the relative positions of the clips (on any of the tracks) behind the trim.

Strange. I don't see how that's possible for it to affect any other channel than the one selected. You must be doing something wrong. ONLY select the track you want to trim. And possibly, make sure there's no sync locks on.

As an alternative, don't trim...use the lift and extract commands.  Lift will remove the material between 2 in and outs and slide all following clips down to fill the hole.  Extract does the same but leaves the hole open.  I find that these commands occasionally work better than Trimming.  Especially when working with a project that has a large number of layers.

    Good luck

Actually, Kevin, you have what lift and extract do reversed. Brain typo I'm sure :)

Dang, between the time I double checked it on my edit system and swung my chair over to email it...I forgot!  Old age is not for the weak.
