    Can't capture 3:1 over firewire

We're trying to capture 3:1 from a firewire connected deck into a fibre connected Unity workspace.  The reason why it's 3:1 and not DV 25 is a long story, but just say that the footage has to go in 2:1 or 3:1.  Through firewire I have no 2:1 or 3:1, only 1:1 and 10:1.  If I crash record the video in through component I've got everything.  Is there any specific reason why you can't do 2:1 3:1 over firewire?

Because firewire capture is basically software based capture, decompression and recompression - unlike if you go through the break out box. In that case the hardware codec takes over. DV25 capture is really just  a data copy since the media stream is already in DV25 format. You are basically limited to the least CPU intensive codecs (1:1, 15:1s, etc) for none firewire native formats.
