    Canon 24F HDV from XH-A1

I have raw footage that I shot on a Canon XH-A1 in 24F HDV with my mini-35 adapter.  It's already been edited on a FCP system but I have the raw footage and would like to capture the raw footage for my own DP reel.  I just upgraded my Avid DV Xpress Pro HD to Avid Media Composer so I'm not as familiar with my new Avid product.

SInce I upgraded, can I capture footage shot on the following cameras/modes:

    Canon XH-A1 HDV 24F

    Canon XL-H1 HDV 24F

    JVC GY-HD250U HDV 24P

    JVC GY-HD110U HDV 24P

    Sony HVR-Z7U HDV 24P

    Sony HVR-V1U HDV 24P

    ...ANY 24P HDV footage

If not... why is FCP so on top on it and Avid so far behind?  What's the word out there?  Do I need to go learn FCP?  If anyone has any info on where Avid stands on this issue or any info on capturing the footage, please let me know.

I am using MC 3.0 and NO luck importing 24f from Canon XHA1. Hopefully Avid will fix this soon? I have read some different work arounds but that means other software for import then extra time for import into avid (a real pain in the ***) So it looks like for now with our stuck with 30i or 60i. I had to use Final Cut pro to cut some stuff i shot in 24f.... i hate having to bounce back and forth between 2 editing platforms. So please anyone from Avid what to comment on when this will be fixed?

Re: Canon 24F HDV from XH-A1

    Earth,

24f is supported by Avid.  This is straight from a tech working at Avid:

The Canon F modes are nearly the same as JVC and others are doing with a P. It stands for the progressive modes of the Canon devices. And because it is progressive you have to set the timeline to progressive before you start capture.

e.g. for a 1440x1080 25F "or 24F?" timeline you have to open the advanced timeline dialog.

    - choose the standard HDV 1440x1080 50i preset "I'm guessing this if for Pal so for NTSC it would be 60i?"

    - change the interlacing to non interlaced

for 30F you can do the same but you have to use the 60i preset

for 24F you can choose both presets but you have to change the framerate to 23.98 also the interlacing.

The information in the previous post is lifted directly from the Pinnacle Liquid website. I know, I posted it based on information I received from Munich, where the Liquid developers are located. Whether the same technique will work in MC, I don't know. The Canon "F" modes are fully supported in Liquid using the information in the previous post.

You can read the post here:

scroll down the page and you will find it.

It should.  And honestly, with all the research I have done - this is definitely not common knowledge.

I can't seem to find how to do this.  Can someone post a post a screenshot or a little more detailed explanation of how to do this?  How do you open the advanced timeline dialog?

Thanks.  This should certainly be a sticky.

    Moviemaker 76,

Thanks for the info.... it's a little harder then what you put, but i think it might work. For example i shot some footage yesterday in 30f, and i did as you said and set the timeline for 1080i/60i and it seems that there is a time code issue. The timecode jumps around like its dropping or adding frames. So if someone can post some more example or how to's would be great. I am about to start a XHA1 workflow thread. So far my XHA1 and Avid are not the best of friends!

Yes, how do you open the "Advanced Timeline Dialog"?  Is this an MC function?  Or Liquid?  I've been transcoding 24F footage for over a year now to work within Avid.  Would love to find out how to make it work natively... thanks.

I would like to second this question. Also, I too think this should be a sticky. I too have a Canon XH A1 and have been very frustrated that Avid does not suppor 24f and 30f footage. I thought that MC 3 would have added support for these formats!

Re: Canon 24F HDV from XH-A1

I have a sinking feeling in the bottom of my stomache...I was told that media composer 3.0 supported 24f, and it seemed a reasonable assumption since both FCP and Adobe do.  How can this be?  the a1 has been out for a long time, and is one of the more popular cameras!  Now I have 20 hours of footage and am unable to edit it on my Avid.  I have always been an Avid fan...but they are forcing me to go look at the competition.

PLEASE if anyone has a real solution post it I don't want to learn different editing software.
