audio project settings: 16 or 24 bit?

Should I use 16 or 24 bit for my project?

My camera only records audio with 16 bit. But then, I have some external audio which was recorded with a higher bitrate. I finish audio outside avid with Nuendo, through OMF export, and it looks like I cannot mix different bitrates. So is it worth to run the whole project as 24-bit to avoid downsampling of some audio clips? How much more disk space will this take up? 50%?

Consolidating and resampling up the whole audio to 24bit would probably be another alternative.

    Any thoughts are welcome...

What does it actually mean when I change the setting in the "audio project settings" dialog box from 16 to 24 in a already started project? Does it affect in any way the output, or does it only tell avid how to conform fiels on import?

It looks like that I can only manage to OEF-import 16-bit files into Nuendo. With 24-bit clips, even single ones (so there is no mixture of sample rates), I always get a "media damaged or not supported" error. Has anyone experienced problems like that?

No, but have you made absolutely sure that even the rendered audio fades and effects are the same bit depth?

Other than that, by going from 24 to 16, you are not really downsampling, but you are truncating the LSB's. This will matter mostly for the silent parts of your sound, since that's where the difference counts.

Re: audio project settings: 16 or 24 bit?

Yes, I've tried it with a single 24-bit clip, no cuts, no fades. And I can get it only into Nuendo by downsampling it from 24 to 16, no matter what the avid or nuendo project settings are.

I wonder if I could batch-reimport the 24-bit master clip again as 16-bit, which would probably be better than getting it truncated from 24 to 16 bit as you say?

    thanks...

It will have the same effect.

Maybe I could dither the original 24-bit clip before batch-reimporting it into avid?

Dithering from 24 to 16 would be better than truncating, yes.
