Create a macro and then you can do that.

The question is a good one and now so many years later Using Quick Dissolve still does the trick but actually, the key to renember is tbat we can save our Effects workspace with a particular bin highlighted (active) and with clever tabbed bin placement and strategic naming of personalized effects, it's a no brainer to simply ctrl+click on a custom effect and have it apply to a highlighted clip. Good things....
