Hello
I recently started experiencing an error whenever I export a project from Avid Media composer and try to play it in VLC: I will get a black screen with an error message that reads, 'Codec not supported: VLC could not decode the format 'AV1x' (No description for this codec)'. I've read other, older posts about how this is supposidly a bug that involves video mixdowns and requires downloading an Avid codec, but I have done many projects for years that involved video mixdowns and had no issues exporting or playing them outside of AVID.
This problem just suddenly popped up in the past two days; I haven't deleted or changed anying in AVID - such as downloading or deleting plugins - and no matter what export settings I try, (including not using the 'same as source' option in the video settings), all I get is a black screen and the above error message. I can, however, play video files in Quicktime.
Has anyone else experienced this problem recently, and have any ideas how to fix it?
For reference, I normally export my projects as a Quicktime movie, and my version of Avid is 2018.11.49905.
Have you tried using the new UME media engine to export your timeline? Instead of going to QuickTime, hit .MOV at the bottom of the menu.

Hi Phillip
Are you referring to the export settings menu?
Correct, but have just noticed that you're running a legacy version of Avid without this feature.
Try doing an OP1a DNxHD export out of Avid and play that in VLC. See if that works and get back to me.
Also if you like you can send me the file, I'll try to open it on my end, and we can investigate if this is an issue on your system or an issue with the export.
I tried what you suggested, and VLC does play the file now! However, the resolution is lower and blockier than the previous files when they're played in Quicktime, and I can't figure out how to export in a higher resolution, since there's only one, default option in the video compression tab.
Hi,
could you send me a screenshot of the exact export settings you're using?
I'm not familiar with J2K encoding. You have a strange project format.
for the sake of troubleshooting could you try to export a 1920x1080p 25fps OP1a DNxHD LB export and see if VLC plays that? I want to explore if it's this strange codec it can't handle.
Hi; sorry for the late reply, I was experimenting with some other settings.
I tried to do what you requested, but AVID is not allowing me to change the export settings for the OP1a options. I've tried looking around in the settings menu, but I haven't had any luck either, and I'm afraid I don't know how to get the settings you've asked for. If it's any help, these are the export settings I can choose from:
