    Native MC for Apple Silicon

    Hi guys,

I ask this just for curiosity and to know about some update. Rosetta version is gorgeous, but when we will see a native version of MC for Apple Silicons? Are there any news about that? Is confirmed, as for the latest statement, during 2022?

    thank you

    Hello David,

I couldn't find anything official just yet, Might be best to EM a customer advocate like Chris or Raff, but unsure how much they can reveal Wink

Also I wonder how much better a native version will be - will it make a big difference on performance? I guess so but have no idea - I've never owned a mac.

Media composer rarely taxes over 50% of the cpu in the current version on a m1max. It only maxes out when transcoding to dnxhr so I guess there is room for improvement for a native version on real-time playback and renders. 2022.7 is pretty stable, a gain in performance and export times and a decent titler would be welcomed. Is native around the corner?

Is this considering other factors? Often I find the bottleneck to be networking or the drives.

Drive is a sabrent xtrm-q 8To with 2700mbps in reads and writes.. Other softwares take full benefit of the same congiguration, an M1max chip with 64gb ram...

Its not rocket science that non native code isn't going to be as efficient.

I have no idea how much work it is to convert the current MC code to native M1 code and if AVid can afford to now have 3 different versions of code in development ( PC, Intel Mac and M1 Mac)

As they have a stable working version I'd expect them to not move the Mac code to native until they drop the Intel Mac code.

So a way off. But I'm not priviy to the Avid development so who knows. As a PC user it erks me to know development is being slowed by having to code for a new platform. I'm sure Mac users have the opposite view.

Can anyone running Avid on Apple Silicon tell me it's actually stable? We have been trying to and stable is not how I would describe it. We're trying to source Intel systems because of how bad it's been.

Resolve had native M1 support almost from day one, plus the all those current platforms, as well as Linux. I'm quite interested in Silicon and it's possibilities. Having just, I have to say reluctantly renewed my Avid support, for a further year, I will only take a serious interest in Mac when and if Avid support it properly, or I decide not to renew any further.

Re: Native MC for Apple Silicon

Pretty stable here on a M1max 64gb as long as titler+ is not involved. I've been editing a doc for 8 weeks and it crashed once every 1-2 day.. MC2021.12 on an Intel Mac doesn't feel more stable to me. What I noticed is when I tried to work on the project at home using full screen playback with a multiple screen configuration instead of an IO box it was near unusable and crashed all the time. The project was UHD and all footage was transcoded to DNxHR. Decent performance overall but I could have used a bit more real-time playback for compositing. Native apple silicon was sheduled for 2022 if I remember correctly, maybe someone from avid could chime in and give us and updated timeframe...

    theschnitt_de:

That's slight hyperbole, with Resolve big powerful RTX Nvidia gpu cards still rule the roost, when it comes to complex colour and online work. Nonetheless I am very interested in the possibilities of professional M2 and beyond in the Mac Studio form factor.

oha! didnt know that that could be an issue. will try to replace titles. i already saw that they are kind of hard to the hardware.

yes of course not comparing it to true workstations, but the kind of projects (i only edit and CC) that smallest laptop of the m1pro line up was able to keep up with, impressed me. i dont see this performance boost in avid.

i graded a 45 min tv show in resolve HD with decent amount of nodes. no NR though and it never crashed.

Final cut i edit 4k hevc footage without making proxies... its crazy, my old intel i9 imac from 2019 maxxed out exported like 4 times slower.

that kind of sold me to the laptops again, as i really only do edting and basic color. i mean it fits in a bagback...!
