Hello,
Here's something I find time consuming, and wonder if anyone has a clever solution:
When I apply an audio effect to a clip in the timeline (via AudioSuite) and I then want to adjust the clip gain of that clip (i.e. to mix it in with the other sounds on the timeline), I find that I have to re-render the clip after every adjustment of the clip gain.
Practically this makes finding the right volume level for any clip with an effect on it very time consuming. (Since I can't preview the adjustment I make without rendering). [Think about editing a battle/war sequence, with multiple different SFX in the timeline, each having different 7-Band EQ settings, etc, etc.....]
It usually takes me 5 or 6 different attempts to find the sweet spot in terms of audio-level/clip gain, which means rendering each audio clip 5 or 6 times.
Is there a better way to do this?
I'm aware that the RTAS plugins can be applied to whole track where this would not be the case - but this is not what I'm after (...beacuse I don't want to make a new track for every single effect I apply).
I'm also aware I can use the preview function within the Audio Suite Effect Dialog, but this doesn't help as it only plays the effected audio and not the other sounds present in the timeline.
I'm also aware that the Audio EQ exists, and doesn't need to be rendered.
I'm also aware that Avid MC is not an audio software, as such.
Thanks for any toughts!

There is an order of operations for audio plugins and levels etc. If you already have an audiosuite plugin on the clip which is rendered, then adjusting the volume by using the per clip volume slider will unrender it. If you instead use the the keyframe audio (not sure what they call it - clip gain?) then this won't unrender the effect as it acts on top of the audiosuite plugin rather than underneath it.
Example:
1) I have a rendered EQ effect on a clip, I want to add some volume so I use the timeline audio slider. Result: Clip becomes unrendered.
2) I have a rendered EQ effect on a clip, I want to add some volume so I use the clip gain audio keyframes in the timeline OR I switch the audio mixer mode to Auto (these do the same thing) and adjust in the mixer. Result: Clip remains rendered.
Hope that helps,
Andi
Thanks so much for that wisdom Andi - brilliant!
I'm not at my computer now but will try that on Monday.
But what you say totally makes sense - I hadn't really thought of it in terms of signal flow.
Cheers!
Also, the signal flow makes sense. Clip Gain says how much level is going INTO the effects plugin, Volume Automation does the level of the processed clip.
If you take, say, a dynamic compressor, there is a huge difference between setting these two levels.
Ah yes, of course.
Nice one.
Thanks a lot! :)
That sort of fine audio adustments are bext done with track based effects for realtime control.
Thats why dubbing mixers have desks with loads of fades that expand out via banks.
It also makes the mixer a far more useful tool if each track represents a "voice"

Yes.
I'm working in an offline environment, usually with a sequence template with only about 12 or 14 tracks, so the signal flow solution fits my particular needs perfectly.
Thanks again.
