Media Composer no longer plays anything

    Hi there

Returning to use MC for the first time in a couple of months I find that no media will play either in the timeline or source window.

Everything looks good, I can import/load video and drag through it to see it's there, but when I hit play, the play arrow goes green, the volume meters fill up, but not a single frame/sound is played. The same applies to previous projects of mine - everything loads up, I can see it all, load it into the monitors/timeline, drag through it, but not play.

Last time I used MC everything was fine. But since then, I have installed 4GB extra RAM, and cloned my hard drive onto an SSD. All of this went swimmingly, and everything else on the computer has been working fine (better than every, actually, as you'd expect).

Would really appreciate any thoughts folks might have as to what's going wrong here.

Thanks in advance, tech specs below

    MC 2020.4

Specs; Windows 10 Home PC, Intel i5-4590 @ 3.30 GHz, 16GB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960, 64 bit opertating. 1TB SSD (Western Digital)

Quit Media Composer and delete the following settings from the directory below:

    C:\Users\Public\Documents\Avid Media Composer\Settings

    MCState

    Site_Attributes

    Site_Settings

Restart Media Composer and see if that helps. If not, what I/O are you using and is it active and communicating with Media Composer? (Should be labelled at the top of the screen). Try to then disable H/W and see if that helps.

Thanks for the suggestions - appreciate it.

I delted those settings files but sadly didn't solve it.

Regarding I/O, and H/W, I'm sorry I don't understand the abbreviations - could you expand?

    Thanks

I just checked my NVIDIA GTX driver was up to date and it is.

Is there another video driver I should be looking at?

    Thanks

If you're running 2020.4 (that's what's in your profile), take a look at page 36 of the Readme for what video driver you should be using:

As GeForce cards are not officially suported, you may have to tinker a bit.

Re: Media Composer no longer plays anything

Thanks - so I checked which NVIDIA driver 2020.4 supports and it is a driver which is not compatible with my Geforce card.

However, the driver listed in the Avid manual is dated from Nov 2019. I was using MC without issue until Dec 2020.

Does this mean I either have to buy a new graphics card (I'd much rather not)

Or can I rollback the version of MC that I am using to whichever version was current two months ago, as everything worked at that point? If so, how to I rollback?

    Many thanks, appreciate the help

All the previous versions of Media Composer can be found in the Download Center (scroll down; they're not in order):

    https://esd.avid.com/ProductInformation.aspx?id=7

I've only needed to downgrade a few times, but when I did I just ran the installer for whatever version I wanted to downgrade to, and let it uninstall the previous version.

To be extra safe, I backup my Avid Projects and Avid Users folders, and make sure my Avid media is safe before installing an older version.

This is a laptop? The GTX 860 is defined as a mobile "card" which is probably a permanent component of the motherboard. I'd try a driver a couple of years old if possible.Sometimes you, in case of a mobile pc have to source the driver from the Laptop manufacturer as there may have been customizations.

Aargh - I made an error in my spec. It's a GTX 960, desktop. Have changed my signature.

Thanks a lot for the response in any case.

Might be worth trying some older drivers for that card.

The driver I have is from Aug 2020, and MC was working great up until Dec 2020. Nevertheless do you think it's still worth me trying older drivers on the card?

Re: Media Composer no longer plays anything

I see that that Intel CPU includes on chip graphics. Normally turned off in BIOS when a descrete video card is installed. Did you reset the BIOS to default that likely would have re-enabled the on board graphics? Could have happened when you added the menory and new SSD.
