    Media Composer 2020.10 Now Available - 29 Oct 2020

Great news……. Today, October 30, 2020, @12:00 pm EDT, Avid launched an October update of Media Composer v2020.10.

Location at Launch:  The new Avid Link 2020.10 is available to customers via MyAvid Master Accounts, through the Avid Link application itself and from the Download Center.

Status of Support Plan:  The ability to launch this Media Composer 2020.10 software is dependent on the status of a customer’s Upgrade and Support Plan on the date this software version is released. Media Composer 2020.10 is released on October 29th, 2020.

Please Note: As of Media Composer 2019.6, Avid will no longer include the Nvidia GPU drivers in the installation package. These drivers must be downloaded separately and can be found on the Nvidia website: Nvidia.com

Please make sure to check the Media Composer ReadMe for supported versions. Please do NOT install the 45x.x versions of the Nvidia drivers at this time.

MCDEV-11537. If you intend to use full-frame stereoscopic with an Avid Artist DNxIQ, you may want to remain with Media Composer v2018.12.x until the issues with Stereoscopic support are resolved in a future version.

    • (MCCET- 2541) When working with Avid Artist DNxIO or Avid Artist DNxIQ, you should disable the Line In recording input (BlackMagic Audio in the Windows OS).
    • Avid recommends that you do not install Desktop Video software version 10.10.1 on Media Composer versions prior to v2018.5.1
    • Avid Artist DNxIO and Avid Artist DNxIQ: If you are using Avid Artist DNxIO, Avid Artist DNxIQ, or a BlackMagic Designs video device, please update to Desktop Video software version v11.0 or higher. If you are using Avid Artist DNxIV and Avid Artist DNxIP please update to AJA software v15.2 or later.
When installing the Sentinel Driver,  check your System Preferences and select “Security and Privacy.” You may need to choose to Allow the driver to be accessed.

    • Media Composer now includes a dnxmov2mxf executable in the \Program Files\Avid\Avid Media Composer\SupportingFiles\Utilities folder. This executable allows you to manually convert MOV files with DNX essence with separately stored alpha to an MXF OP1a file with DNX essence and embedded alpha. The tool is available for Windows, osX, and Linux. To run on Windows, Visual C++ Redistributable for Visual Studio 2015 or Visual C++ Redistributable for Visual Studio 2017 is required. Run the command from a command prompt on Windows or from terminal on macOS.DNXMOV2MXF usage is:dnxmov2mxf path_to_mov [path_to_mxf]

    Changed in Media Composer v2020.10

For details on new features, see the What’s New v2020.10 document.

The following are new for Media Composer v2020.10

    • ProRes RAW

    ProRes RAW

Media Composer supports linking and playback of ProRes RAW media using the UME plug-in. Exporting ProRes RAW is not supported.

     IMPORTANT:

What’s Fixed in 2020.10:  The following has been fixed.

    • Bug Number: MCCET-2665.  With an Avid Artist DNxIO or DNxIQ attached, you could not playback a sequence in the Timeline if calibration tone was playing.
    • Bug Number: MCCET-3704. Audio track effects did not show Bypass status.
    • Bug Number: MCCET-3775.  PhraseFind was not indexing linked media.
    • Bug Number: MCCET-3655.  Linking Vantage created MXF media crashed Media Composer with XDCAM HD 50Mbits (1080i/60) project.
    • Bug Number: MCCET-3812. With Dynamic Relink enabled, you might have received a “Structure Exception” error when loading a sequence.
    • Bug Number: MCCET-3207. The text “%20” replaced spaces in UNC and NAS paths in the Source Browser.
    • Bug Number: MCCET-3533. You could not successfully update your sequence after editing group clips.
    • Bug Number: MCCET-3805.  When in Frame View, thumbnails did not always match the clip and might have changed once selected.
    • Bug Number: MCCET-3407. If you switched the project to Stereoscopic or changed the One row or Two row Button Display at Bottom options in the Composer Settings, the Source/Record buttons reverted to default.
    • Bug Number: MCCET-3737. Even after performing a save, floating tabbed Bin Containers become un-docked when switching to a different workspace.
    • Bug Number: MCCET-3357. You could not successfully playback Capture in progress files coming from MOG..
    • Bug Number: MCCET-3823. The SearchData folder location defaulted to “Other” and did not revert back to “Default”.
    • Bug Number: MCCET-3836. Checking out EVS ingested media from MediaCentral UX resulted in a mix of DNxHD 120 and DNxHD SQ.
    • Bug Number: MCCET-3797. You might have received a “Some of the embedded media failed to import” error when trying to import an AAF with embedded media.Bug Number: MCCET-3819. The highest quality Dynamic Relink setting linked to AVC Long GOP 50 instead of AVC-I 100.

Limitation:  The following are known limitations.

    • Photoshop PSD files are not supported for AMA linking if QuickTime is not installed.
    • Some fonts, by their design, are available only in Bold. On the Mac system, it can happen that    selecting a font does not produce any visual changes. Try selecting “Bold.”
    • If you launch a project and receive an “Enable 3rd Party Emulation” warning, even if you select Enable in the warning dialog, you should also perform the following: Select File > Settings and click the Project tab. Click General Settings and select “Enable Bin Sharing on 3rd party storage emulating Avid NEXIS/ISIS.

    • Bug Number: MCDEV-12735. Maestro graphics do not appear correctly in the Timeline if your system uses the Radeon video card.
    • Bug Number: DEFI-1808. (Media Composer | Distributed Processing) Two clips or sequences will always be created when performing a consolidate or transcode with Media Composer | Distributed Processing.
    • Bug Number: MCDEV-11481. Promoting a title from the Title Tool application to Avid Titler+ cannot be performed if it includes a motion adapter.
    • Bug Number: MCCET-11796. Larger than 10 bit DPX files might fail to link correctly.Workaround: Go to File > Settings and click the User tab. In the Link Settings, click the Link Options tab and make sure Alpha Channel is set to Ignore.
    • Bug Number: MCDEV-11430. Media Tool ignores the “Current project” filtering option and lists media files that are not associated with the current project.
    • Bug Number: MCDEV-11197. In some instances, the Interleave option might not appear in the Export As dialog box. If you are performing an Export using the Avid Media Processor, the Interleave option should appear when you choose Stereo, 5:1, or 7.1 Audio.Workaround: If it does not appear, briefly toggle back to the Mono setting, then toggle to Stereo Mix once again. Doing so should reveal the Interleave option.
    • Bug Number: MCDEV-8641. (AMD Graphics). Systems with AMD graphics cards might display tearing when performing Full Screen playback.
    • Bug Number: MCDEV-9269. (Media Composer | Cloud) After performing a remote download operation on a sequence containing AVC-I 100 remote media, the downloaded media appears as XAVC-I 100.
Workaround: Download the entire master clips.

This means that if your support plan expired say 10/29/2020, then the last version you could use is 2020.10 unless you renew the plan within the 30 day grace period.  If we come out with 2020.12 in December as planned then you would not be able to use that version.

Thank you for the quick answer Marianna Yes

So if it is related to the support plan, and we don't have one, we will be able to use later versions anyway if we upgrade anyway, correct?

You could only if you crossgraded to a subscription.  Reinstatements of perpetuals stiopped last year and we honoired then if the channel had stock but last I checked they were all gone.  So the only option is to crossgrade and then you can use the newer software.  If you dont then you remain at the last version accessible before the plan expired.  Do you recall how long ago you expired?  You can also email me that info and your System ID.

One of the things you need to do going from 2018.x to 2020.x is create new user settings. I can't guarantee that's what's causing your current problem, but make a new user and see if that helps.

Re: Media Composer 2020.10 Now Available - 29 Oct 2020

I was mistaken about the new test project.  The new project plays media that was linked in the old project just fine (the play/record windows in composer just weren't showing properly.)

The old real project will not play the media that it is still linked with, nor will it play any new linked media of any type (other than audio).  The media is Apple ProRes 4444 24fps, 1.59gb/sec, 4096x3112  (this plays in the test project, but not the old real one)

Linking any video or still media of any type will not play in the old real project, but audio links fine.

Re: Media Composer 2020.10 Now Available - 29 Oct 2020

Just created a new user.  Some clips show up in the monitor but still say 'can't access AMA Media Stream plug in to play this clip" and won't actually play.  But it will now link to new media that plays fine (including things that are already in the timeline) but it won't "relink" to the existing linked media so the pre-existing timeline is still unplayable.

Re: Media Composer 2020.10 Now Available - 29 Oct 2020

Video format for an originally linked clip shows up as "H.264(NTSC)" and for that same clip linked again (not relinked) shows up as "H.264" (without the parenthesis and NTSC)   I don't know if that helps.

Re: Media Composer 2020.10 Now Available - 29 Oct 2020

    PROBLEM SOLVED!

So i relinked one clip to "video of any format" "media from any project" and all the rest of the video clips came readable (not the audio clips, just the video clips).   So it's not a full win, but it's pretty good.  I guess it doesn't recognize itself to be its same project, or it is considering the video another format and there is no selection for relinking audio clips. BTW, if there is truly no way of relinking Linked audio, that is going to cause people some really serious problems.  Fortunately for me, I'm conforming video to a single uncut audio track, so it will be easy for me to replace it.
