    2019 iMac/Catalina/MC 2020.8 Upgrade Fail

I've been happily using Avid MC for 20+ years first on a PC, now on a Mac. After buying a 2019 iMac that arrived loaded with Mojave, I decided to bite the bullet and upgrade to Catalina and MC 2020.8 (from Media Composer 2019.12).

I deactivated MC 2019, then uninstalled it. I then upgraded my iMac to Catalina with no problem- did a few things and shut down and restarted the iMac a few times with no problem.

Then I installed MC 2020.8. Upon the request to restart the computer, it got stuck at about 2/3 of the way on the progress bar for about an hour. I forced quit and restarted again and the same thing happened. I forced-quit again, this time completely powering down and disconnecting every peripheral from my iMac except the keyboard. I restarted and the same thing happened.

Following Apple’s instruction on what to do if the computer freezes, I tried and failed to start in Safe Mode. I than started up Mac Recovery and ran First Aid from Disk Utility on all drives and containers as instructed by Apple. The computer still will not start normally or in Safe Mode.

I can no longer start my iMac at all! My next step is to call Apple Support but first I would like to know if anybody has had a similar issue or suggestion on how to fix this. Thanks.

    Hi Michael,

I don't recall any reported issue, but I remember similar situation with Mojave before, it has something to do with Chrome, you can check the links below.

    Re: 2019 iMac/Catalina/MC 2020.8 Upgrade Fail- Resolved

Thanks for the info, Ralph. I don’t know what happened at the first attempt, but as far as I can tell everything is working fine now.

I called Apple. They tried a few things then had me use Recovery to re-install Catalina. According to the first link you sent, the Chrome bug should not have affected my machine (which it didn't) since I did not disable SIP and I have the most resent version of Chrome.

Honestly, I didn't have my eyes on the screen during the first install, maybe something happened while I was doing my laundry. The second time around the install went quickly and smoothly. Thanks.
