    Automatic linking of files.

I'm still getting to grips with my massive upgrade from Xpress Pro to MC 2018.

When I connect an external drive pretty well all files on that drive get linked to an open bin. Is there a way to prevent this, I just want to select certain files - and usually I like to import rather than link.

Also, don't import. Use link, it is faster. Import also stops you from accessing the consolidate function which will slow things down even further.

As a test I imported a 11.62GB (roughly 10 mins 30 secs in duration) AVC Intra MXF from a Canon C300mk2 to XDCAM 50 .

Import took 4 mins 53 secs, Link and consolidate took 34 seconds.

As a test of material that Avid cannot consolidate, I took an 895MB MP4 from a GoPro and imported/transcoded to DNx120

Import took 4 min 15 secs and link and transcode took 49 secs

Hopefully you can see the benefit of Link over import.  There are various other reasons to use link over import to do with frame rate, raster size, metadata etc so I would suggest having a bit of a dig around the forums for more info on this. Thre are very few reasons to use import any more.

Totally agree with Andi.  To add, the Import feature uses old tech that can lead to quality changes.  I really only use it these days for stills (jpg, png, etc.)

Thanks Andi, that's very helpfull. I have used 'Link' a few times and that was ok with MP4 files, but my kit is a bit old - HP XW8600 (USB 2 for external drives) and struggles with anything with a higher data rate. Thinking of getting an Esata card which should help.

Thanks, I will need to update from USB2 to Esata. I've been using a small SSD with a sata to USB bridge for inputting (linking)  stills and JPEGs etc. but there's so much on the external drive and each time I plug it in Avid links everything that's on that drive rather letting me select what I want to link.
