Many years ago Kevin P McAuliffe did a video tutorial on making a countdown in MC. The principle should still work today.
It can be viewed here.

I did it while ago. I used timecode generator, mixdowned it and reverse it. Then you can just crop minutes or frames etc. just to make it look as seconds only.
You can add it even to the real action background, but you have to reverse the motion of it, then add transparent TC and then mixdown and reverse the whole thing.
No need to reverse it - timecode generator has a 'remaining' option.
Unfortunately it's only sequence remaining, rather than clip remaining, so you do have to mix it down
Hi Carl, I know your post is a year old now but how did you get it working on 2020?
I've tried a couple of times and nothing happens, no plugin appears in the effects palette?
I notice your on a PC and I'm Mac but I'm sure the install is much the same.
Do you recall any install problems?
Owen
Hi Owen,
I think (but I don't know for sure) the plugin was only written for Windows, as there's no macOS listed under the OS specifications here:

Sorry I don't have a better answer.

There appears to be a 'Time Clock' in the effects palette (New Blue Elements) which may do what you are after?
