Top tips for running MC on older/slower hardware

    Hi

A lot of our students are now trying to run MC on their own, often under specced macs.
Those that aren't running Catalina are using MC 18.12.7 our labe version, often with only 8GB RAM.
I'm looking for suggestions to make things less laggy and have come up with thei following:

    1. Avoid linking and transcode to proxy resolutions wherever possible.
    2. Set video quality to draft [yellow] or half good [yellow/green].
    3. Keep bins closed unless needed.
    4. keep the number of itmes in a bin down if possible.
    5. use Project window/Info/ Clear bin memory periodically.
I'd appreciate any suggestions or corrections Big Smile Nigel

I would make sure that in activity monitor they quit appmanhelper, link afetr they activate and launch.  Backgroundservices as well can suck up bandwidth.

Why avoid linking and transcoding? how do they get media into Avid?

    Surely not importing?

Maybe ensure AMA management is disabled. Maybe link and transcode in a diffferent project and then move the transcoded bin to the edit project.

Ensure no other apps are running. No browsers facebook etc.

Check what apps are running at startup and weed out those hogs.

If possible upgrade to a boot SSD.

If possible add 8GB to get to 16GB

Keep ome bin with the current sequence open in it and close any bins with older copies of sequences. DOn't have one massive sequences bin open.

Have the minimum number of Avid tools open at any one time. Avoid leaving things like the source browser open or the audio mixer.

Look at the Media cache settings as they maybe set to high gobbling up RAM.
