    Problem transcoding XAVC-S linked clips

When I try to transcode XAVC-S linked clips in 2018.12.1, the "Transcode" button is dimmed.  The original clips are 1080x1920 29.97p from a Sony a7rii and the transcode format is DHxHD 145.  I can get the clips into this format by using the Import+Link option but this is a slow, unnecessary waste of disk space.  Any ideas of how to solve the problem? By the way, trying to import the clips without linking them produces a message that this function isn't supported.

Do you have the Nablet plugin that allows you to link to XAVC? With that you should be able to link and then transcode the footage to whatever resolution you like.

If not, there's a demo of it here so you can try it out:

Re: Problem transcoding XAVC-S linked clips

    i'm confused by your wording.

import and link are two different functions. when you say "Import+Link option", i'm assuming you mean the source browser setting dropdown for double click behavior?  When this is set, it will only affect what happens if you double click in source browser on media that can't be linked, causing it to be imported instead. However, at the end of your post, you say you get an error when you try to import. I'm also confused by your description of something being slow and a waste of disk space.

Are you trying to convert your linked clips to dnx145(transcode), or consolidate (keep codec, rewrap)? Consolidate may not be available with this codec, which would explain why the button is greyed out.

If you are trying to transcode and button is greyed out, you either dont have enough disk space, or you haven't selected a valid drive to send the transcoded media to.

XAVC-S should link without an external plugin. You may or may not get functional timecode. If you need the timecode, but media composer is only reading it as 00:00:00:00, you need either the nablet plugin, or to do the conversion in an external app that understands sony's mp4 wrapper metadata, like resolve or premiere.

Thanks for that, Dave. I got wrapped up in the timecode part of it and forgot XAVC-S link should work even without the plugin.

I don't have the Nablet plug-in.  I thought it became unnecessary because recent versions of MC include the plug-in to link (and presumably transcode) XAVC-S files.  Am I misinformed?

Re: Problem transcoding XAVC-S linked clips

Sorry for the imprecise wording.  I'm trying to transcode my linked XAVC-S clips to DNxHD 145. There's no problem linking them.

When I try importing them (instead of linking and transcoding), I get an error message saying that these files can't be imported and asking whether I want to link and consolidate/transcode them instead.  If I reply "yes" to this message, the clip is then linked and then properly transcoded.  But what I want to do is first to link the clips (no problem), view them, and then decide which to transcode, which I how I've worked in MC for the past 7 years.  This is what isn't working.  If I link the clips, then the transcode function is grayed out, as is the consolidate function.
