Hi everyone.
I'm editing a project that because of various factors had day 1 shot in HD and days 2-5 shot in 4k (3996 x 2160). But my output will ultimately be HD.
For subclipping purposes I created 2 separate projects.
My plan was to use the HD project and simply open the bins from the 4k project inside the HD project.
Additionally I'd like to keep the option open of reframing within the 4k images.
So my question is firstly, is this the smoothest way to handle this situation? And secondly, will I be able to maintain the 4k source material, and zoom in when I need, retaining the necessary resolution to keep a good image quality?
Thanks in Advance

You're over-producing your edit.
As long as you link to your material rather than import you have access to the full resolution.
(You can switch back and forth between resolutions as needed using the format tab and presets dropdown in the project panel. No need for separate projects.)
And yes, if you've already done your subclipping, just copy all the bins into a single project.
Given your system specs, (I have a similarly specced PC) you will then want to transcode to a lower resolution proxy for smooth playback during your edit. (1/4 resolution is usually fine.) Reframing can be done with FrameFlex.
When your edit is done, relink your edited timeline to original linked clips and output.
Thanks so much. Yes it's all linked media so far.
That's really helpful. One small clarification though. When I transcode to the 1/4 setting should I check the frame flex box or no?
Also, since I have 2 separate projects, can I just copy the folders/bins from the HD project into the 4k Project?
And finally, if I already have subclips from the 4k files do they relink easily enough with the proxy clips? Sorry for the possibly dumb question, but I've mainly worked directly with HD clips in the past.
Thank.

That bakes in any FrameFlex effects to the transcoded footage. As a matter of personal preference I keep it unchecked -- that way I know any further Frame Flex manipulation will come out as I intend. For that reason I don't do any color burn-ins either.

Yes. You can do that either at the finder level or by importing the bins through the project window. (Project/Bins/Hamburger/Open Bins/navigate to other project....) Again, personally I prefer to do it at the finder level so they're simply there.

If you've done relinking before it works the same way. Personal preference again, I highlight the source clips, then right click on the sequence and use relinking Selected items in ALL open bins. Same can be done with subclips or subsequences. Some folks prefer to delete or hide their proxies so they won't accidentally end up in the final. (I keep them around for a short time for revisions.)
You've been here long enough to know there are no dumb questions -- just things you haven't done personally yet. Every Avid editor has a different knowledge base.
Best of luck.
Thanks that really helps. And thanks for the kind words as well!
