so I have a sequence and I wanted to rearrange some clips. I have the extract yelllow arrow highlighted on the smart tool, I grabbed a clip from the end of the sequence and brought it into the middle of the seqeunce. With sync locked on my tracks, my thinking was that everything to the left of the moved clip should have shifted to the right to stay in sync but it didn't. Only the track that the footage was moved from moved. All tracks are highlighted. What am I missing here. Geez I need to edit more. 

Did you have the group option selected that ensures it selects audio with video when you click?

If you did then the audio and video would move.

If you only had video selected and not the audio then it will override the sync locks and cause sync to be lost.

You'll have to create a cut on all the tracks you want to shift including filler. If you then move the filler with the video and other tracks you will get the desired result.  You can also try in timeline settings "segment drags sync locks on" - that sorta works but may give unexpected results. The issue is that Avid doesn't know what to do with the gap you created. For example if there is a contiguous clip underneath the clip you are moving does the NLE simply cut the extra material out on all the other other tracks? or does it leave it there and throw everything out of sync? If it is only filler then moving that with the clip solves the issue.

Sync locks work better with insert editing.

Another method which is just as time consuming is to drag the clip in overwrite mode to a new track at the desired position, select all to the right or left (except the new track) and drag it until you've opened up the correct gap.

CTRL A in the timeline selects all tracks and CTRL SHIFT A deselects all tracks. 

 

Oh and what Pat said to move sync audio and video together but I assumed the problem was more complex than that.

Yellow arrow in SmartTool only works per track, so moving a clip earlier in the timeline will only shift the other clips on the same tracks. It's great for swapping things around within a sequence.

To do what you want to do, easiest is to mark your clip (in/out) then ALT-X the clip. It'll be cut from the timeline but a temp copy will appear in the source monitor. Move your playhead in the timeline to where you want to insert it, and use the V (splice-in yellow arrow). As long as you have sync-lock on all tracks, you'll be good!

Oh ok, I didn't know the smartlool worked per track only. I guess I have to do the in/out alt x into the source monitor. Is there no quicker way? Thanks everyone for your input. Maybe we can see if there can be a easier way to achieve this. 

 

I actually think Pierreh's method is very quick - essentially 3 keystrokes and one reposition of the playhead. It also has the advantage fo being more accurate than clicking and dragging.

Indeed, I don't quite get how it could be shorter yet precise. The way I describe is essentially 3 key stroke and one mouse move - T to mark the clip (or ALT T to ignore the track selector), ALT-X to cut it and send it to the player, move the blue line to the new position and hit V to splice it in. How simpler/faster can it be - whislt being precise?
