Not enough space for transcode warning is false.

    MC 8.8.4 win 10

Usually Im given a lot of 4k (not exactly sure of resolution) footage from Alexa.

When I transcode I usually transcode to project resolution, usually 1080p 23.98

And Ill select to source's frame rate and choose DNX SQ

It will say that there isnt enough room which is completely false.  Is there a way to bypass this warning so it just transcodes to this drive regardless.  The calcuation doesnt seem to be acurate.

and here's a feature request for transcoding.  It would be cool if Media Composer transcoded in alphabetical order, that way if there is an error, its very to easy to see where it left off, and resume.

    Thanks

You can try to transcode the clips in batches, instead of all at once; this could be a bit of a problem if You're an overnight transcode kind of person! And the false warning shouldn't pop up nevertheless, the editor should just work.

Re: Not enough space for transcode warning is false.

Yes that is one work around, another is background transcoding, or finding another drive.

There are several work arounds, but I feel like it should be fixed.  thanks!

You mean that it does work when background transcoding?

I certainly do agree with that!

First off we are talking NTFS for all the drives involved aren't we?

Also how much space on the boot drive? It maybe a tmp file issue.

Re: Not enough space for transcode warning is false.

Good call Pat but yes all NTFS.  C: has about 120Gb free as an SSD M2.

I had to give up transcoding to a more multicam friendly intra frame codec - tried a few transcode settings inc background and and DNX120 and DNXHR SQ and also a timeline mixdown.  All baulked so I'm multicamming with this one C100 long gop source - all the other long GOP ones transcoded Ok - inc the 3 hour 'wide' cam.

She's coping OK with 14 streans and one long GOP! Thank goodnes the 50P clip WOULD transcode to 25P as it was always out of sync.

Here's a link to a post I made in May 2016 with the exact same issue. And even in May 2016 this was not a new issue, it had been going on for ages. It's very annoying. Luckily I work with a Nexis which allows me to increase the size of the workspace so that I can transcode, but I can imagine it is very annoying for people who aren't able to do this. Fix it Avid!

Re: Not enough space for transcode warning is false.

Marianna - do you think this can be escalated - we have several with the issue.

I tried all sorts to get my transcode to keep going without the 'failed to write essence' error - subclips, mixdowns, different codecs, different drives (all with plenty of space) but it just would not do it.

Re: Not enough space for transcode warning is false.

Some details from when I've seen this that could maybe be helpful.

We start with a number of XAVC Intra clips and are transcoding to DNxHR LB

On the Transcode screen the size estimation shows as 182429 MB. When running the transcode it hangs for a little bit then throws an error stating there is not enough space indicating that the transcode needs 1.8TB of space.

Workarounds are to run a background transcode or to do the transcode in smaller chunks.

Once you get the transcode to go through bby either of these methods and add up the file size it matches the smaller ~182 GB size.

Seems like there is some bad math somewhere...

Re: Not enough space for transcode warning is false.

I was able to track down a reporducible case for this.

    Create a new 1080 59.94 project.

Link to media of another frame rate.  In my case I have a 25fps pro res QT.

Open the transcode screen and make sure to select Keep Source's frame rate.

Note the space required and select a destination that only has 1.5 to 3 times the required space for the transcode.

Choose transcode and see the error.
