How do I import AVhd .mov files?

When I try to play them in the VLC player, I can hear the audio, but I don't have picture. I get an error that says:

Codec not supported: VLC could not decode the format "AVdh" (No description for this codec)

When I try to import it into Avid, the audio comes through, but the picture is not there, just a green screen.

Any idea how to get this into my system?  Thanks!

Where did they come from? A camera? What kind of camera? If they came from some other place, where?

AVdh is the FourCC for DNxHR. I don't think libavcodec (which is what VLC uses to decode) has been updated to include DNxHR (or if it has you would need to update the copy used by VLC). Either that or if it's using QuickTime you would need to install the latest QT Codec pack for Avid.

What is the container being used (.mxf, .mov, etc.)? And what program was used to create the files?
