Larger than 2k Super 16mm scan PR444 offline DNxHD workflow Resolve or AMA Frame Flex?

    Hello there,

I'm about to receive some slightly larger than 2k PR444 files from Met Post (scans of our s16) and i feel a tad nervous about my workflow.

Plan 1 is to bring it into Davinci Resolve and transcode to DNxHD media, while adding a corrective LUT & somehow cropping to the useable area of the Super 16 (1:1.66). Then I think i can bring it into Media Composer (version 7 most likely, possibly 8) as a custom raster 24p (35mm 4 perf - for syncing) project, sync & edit (using MC to mask it to 16:9)

Plan 2 would be to AMA link and then use frame flex to crop. But then i think that may prevent my syncing using the 4 perf film project as Michael Phillips outlined here http://24p.com/wordpress/?p=163

Do either of these sound like a good way to go? Am i missing something blindingly obvious? If i want to do reframing or any cropping, how would that translate back to our PR444 media during the online & color? Any advice there at all?

    Thanks so much!

    Matthew

The blog being referred to states that syncing from the timeline is not possible for ¼ frame perf, but syncing from the bin does allow for it. Just need to plan accordingly. Custom raster sizes in Media Composer are only in v8.4. If you create a custom project that matches the source scan size, then FrameFlex brings no value over a standard resize effect. If you are delivering 1920x1080, then FrameFlex will have some value from the slightly large image resolution, but with the formats being that close in X/Y resolution the difference may not be noticeable to the eye. As far as LUT goes, is the film scan going to be LOG or color corrected in any way to a target color space?

    Thanks for this Job!

(Ok ALSO re the 1/4 frame syncing note)

    Yes delivering 1920 x 1080.

And yes adding a single LUT for a slight adjustment.

Whichever option i use for bringing in the 1.66 footage, if i have a 1920x180 project That 1.66 image will leave me with black bars left and right in the timeline.

My thought was to add a top layer video track above all my editing tracks with a resize on it zoomiing into the images so that the correct 16:9 center area of the video is visible. This would then allow me to reframe & move any clips slightly where necessary (which is what i'm after - that's actually why i dont want to just select / crop to the center 16:9 area of my frame when i transcode)

However that idea seems a bit clunky & backward to me... There must be a better way?

I would still recommend updating to 8.4 so you can transcode to native source resolution using DNxHR rather than transcoding to HD and locking yourself in. That way you can default to 16:9 center crop and still reframe as needed, even with the transcode.

    Job,

just wanted to follow up. I managed to get permission to upgrade my assistant's machine to 8.4, made a custom project at the frame size of my media, re-transcoded all my media to DNxHR LB over the weekend. Everything's working great and now my mind is at rest and many more options open to me. Thanks!
