Open letter to Avid (Xavc-s codec): can You ask to Sony ...

    Hi,

I would like to know if Avid can ask to sony to support xavc-s format in it's ama plugins. It's a shame that only MC can't import xavc-s file format.

So,Avid can you ask to Sony to kindly support xavc-s via ama plug-in? Sony is completely ignore us avid user

    Regards

    Ugo

Marianna STOP SPYING!  You're not back until next Monday.

I already engaged Dennis this morning (well before your postSurprise) and he's digging up some info for me.

I have no specifics other than this is already in the works.  Will post when I have concrete info to share.

    Thanks!

    Hi Ugo,

We work closely with Sony on a range of AMA plugins for Media Composer.  Unfortunately, XAVC-s is not supported by the current batch of Sony AMA plugins.  We have found that the MediaReactor plugin from Drastic Technologies (http://www.drastic.tv/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=58:mediareactorworkstation&catid=40&Itemid=80) is capable of decoding XAVC-s material in Media Composer.  There is a free trial avaialble from their website.

    I hope that this helps.

    Thank you.

    Dennis

    Hi,

the plug-ins works with standard frame (my case 25P) rate but a 100P clip can't be use. The stuttering is also visible on mediareactor player.

also as many program is based on FFmegg free library and is very well priced

I hope that Avid can speak with Sony on this "problem".

    The following products support XAVC-S:

     • Adobe Premiere Pro

     • Apple Final Cut Pro X

     • Grass Valley Edius Pro

     • Autodesk Smoke

     • Sony Vegas Pro

     • Blackmagic Resolve (no audio as of this writing)

Many of us would be extremely grateful if Avid could encourage Sony to support this codec on Media Composer.

It would certainly allow us to keep jobs on MC -- rather than migrate to alternate NLE platforms.

    Thank you for your attention.

adding my two centavos. avid has lots of things to catch up with.

I have to stick with it for legacy projects that will take years to finish, but more and more doing new ones on another nle.

    love it, but...

Can we go back to the way audio nodes used to be selected? Please? ie if you have audio nodes at the same time on selected tracks; then selecting 1 audio node selects them all at that time. Having to shift select nodes or add an in and out is time consuming and counter productive. At least make it an option.

Folks... Dennis is aware of your request for this and it isnt as easy as it seems.

You know he works closely with Sony and all the other plug-in partners on a range of AMA support for Media Composer.

XAVC-s is not supported by the current batch of Sony AMA plugins for a bunch of reasons of which I cant get into.  Dennis found that the MediaReactor plugin from Drastic Technologies:

As soon as we have more scoop to share, we will. At least you have a free trial to get what you need done.

Re: Open letter to Avid (Xavc-s codec): can You ask to Sony ...

I'll go a bit off topic but not so much (I don't want to open a new topic to write this). Does it seems to me, or really the avid supported formats document is stuck in 2011? (http://www.avid.com/static/resources/us/documents/Avid_Editing_Systems_Supported_Formats_Feb-2011.pdf) Right now I'm trying to configure a good workflow with Sony cameras trying to avoid the old DV and MPEG2 based codecs, avoiding especially the XDCAM HD that's Long GOP and needs to be decoded and re-encoded every time loosing quality and time. I've been really happy to see that Sony have finally developed an AVC intra codec in 2012, but now we must wait for avid to native support it. 90% of the times we need to work as fast as possible, with a bulletproof system and with no time for transcoding, XAVC intra on the paper seems to me that could be a good modern solution if it where well-integrated in an Avid Interplay environment. Couldn't it be? ...or maybe yes, we might switch as soon as possible to Panasonic (or to Premiere anytime is possible)...

If Edius can do it - why can't Avid? It does seem to me like the whole AMA system is fundamentally flawed - and I've said this many times by relying on manufacturer support to work. Avid can now conveniently say "we are waiting for Sony to support it" but users have a right to ask when will Avid support it? Avid is the NLE originator not Sony. It used to be up to Avid to support various tape decks and it should be up to Avid to support codecs. With respect to both Marianna and Dennis who both do fantastic work this will be an ongoing issue for as long as AMA relies on manufacturer support and not internal engineering.
