Motion effect settings for 25p projects

I am planning to do motion effects on 25p material (5D), then mix down the video prior to transcoding to 15:1s and recutting it offline (don't ask!). What are the best render settings for speed ups and slo mos for this type of material? Why does Avid give field motion options in progressive projects?

Because they are mutually exclusive. There are no fields in progressive video. That's the point.

The best render settings don't exist. Different shots may look better with different settings. FluidMotion is the smoothest type of slow motions, as it creates intermediate frames by tracking vectors and 'morphing' techniques, BUT that does sometimes cause artefacts in the image.

Yeah - I always scratched my head on the contradictory render options for P material.

The silly answer is shoot 50P if you dont want interlaced but want good as interlaced slo mo I'm afraid.  5D Mk IV ? ;-)

    Hi Job,

Sorry I don't understand. Yes, interpolated (frame) and fluid motion make sense, but duplicated field and both fields? What do these settings do in a progressive project with progressive material?

Re: Motion effect settings for 25p projects

This is the only relevant thread I found - would love to know people's thoughts.

Processing some timelapsed jpg sequences and really keen to keep picture quality as good as possible.
Jaggy-edge artefacts on the first blu-ray output from what will become a bigger project, so I'm trying to reasses the workflow!

    Avid project is 1080p/25
Importing sequential files into DNxHD185 produces 'moving footage', but at 25fps which is too fast for the visuals.
Slowing these clips to 5fps (ie.5 frames per image) gives much more satisfying movement - but 'Motion Effect' gives choices for '2-field motion effect' even in a progressive project. What to do?

I'd rather Avid didn't introduce it's own 'motion blur' at this stage; work with overlapping 4-fr dissolves is coming in later.
Or am I missing a good trick?

What motion effect did you try?

Re: Motion effect settings for 25p projects

    Thanks.

Variable speed, 5.00 fps, 20% speed

'Motion Effect' box also still needs something selected under 'render 2-field motion effect using:'

    and I selected 'both fields'

No good monitors here for comparisons (and didn't see issue until blu-ray stage first time around) -
so any understanding of what's going on, would be really appreciated

(Been working on some sort of equivalence to 'motion blur' but happening more slowly and across longer durations than frame-to-frame; the events are quite chaotic)

Not in front of my system at the moment. Isn't there an option for fluid motion? Maybe you need to promote the motion effect to gain access to other motion options?

Re: Motion effect settings for 25p projects

Can't see an option for 'promoting' motion effect - but that whole issue of 'fields' in a progressive project is still the confusing idea; is it just a legacy thing that never got grappled with, or something meaningful I'm not understanding?

Thanks for engaging with this, though - S

Interesting blog about the results of the various motion effects types in progressive projects:
