    Windows 8...

I have to say I think this is absolutely the right direction for MS to go:

http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/technology/2011/09/windows-8-a-first-look-at-microsofts-tablet-os-in-action.html The idea that it's the same OS (not a different one for Mobile and one for Computer) is brilliant AND the ability to use mouse, pen as well as finger is superb.  There are many programs where you want to use a pen/mouse (i.e. Editing software, PS etc...). There are Win7 computers now where you can detach the screens and they become a tablet (which is an idea I like a lot - a decent keyboard when you actually have to work rather than play), but the OS isn't there to make it really workable.  Looks like that's gonna change. Re: Windows 8...

I had exactly the opposite reaction. The fact that this will be an OS for mobile devices too has made me wonder why in the world I would want such a toy for my desktop. I don't care at all about fancy phone/tablet stuff. I'm not into fads. I want a hard-core desktop OS, and therefore Microsoft has sunk my interest in Wndows 8 to about zero.

My impression is that Windows 8 is far from being intended as just for mobile tablets, but is designed for desktops as well.  There is a way to turn off the fancy touch-screen stuff in favor of a more traditional desktop.

Even linux is moving toward accomodating the whole touch/gesture interface...Microsoft has a huge commercial /industrial / corporate market to appease. Rest assured, it will be possible to turn off the eye / I~O candy as can be done with Win 7.

Danger Will Robinson... I smell Feature Bloating!

I have no issue with Macs or PCs.  They're tools.  Markets create tools, and tools create markets.  And I could care less if video gets into my Media Composer source window via dragging it, flicking it, swiping it; or by using a pen, a finger, a mouse, a dead fish, or a fuzzy dice... just as long as the darn thing goes in.

And I do love progress and change.  But thankfully, Craftsman Tools makes hammers, not Apple or Microsoft.  Otherwise we'd have to buy hammers compatible with only certain nails.

Atomike, I completely agree that an OS must first work as an OS - and Win8 is for Computers and Tablets NOT mobile devices, that's different (and you're right, wouldn't work).  If you want to think of it in a different way, at present the iPad is like a Big iPhone - it wasn't designed for computing, but browsing/playing.  Win8 is simply computing in Desktop, Laptop or Tablet form.

If this ever gets moved to (or seen by the people who read) the feature request forum, I'd like to cast my vote against a dead-fish-based GUI.  All the other choices listed are fine with me.

I second Carl's recommendation.  In my experience, I've found using dead fish is not intuitive in the computer world.
