MC crashes and i'm still logged-in.

Fore some reason MC crashed last night, while starting up just after the log in point.

Windows still works so I think I can just re-install MC. But, I had no way to log out bij Avid.

Can I re-install without any trouble or do I have to call Avid ?

(MC is on it's own drive with it's own windows 7  in a multi-boot system.)

As it crashes when you try to log in I would just start with logging in as a new user or delete your old user profile

    Thanks,

I was logged in, but just after that it crashes, it still starts, but keeps crashing -freezing up the system-

Resetting the system and w7 is not the way to keep things stable, so I thought, is it possible to re install or do I get problems bevause the system is already logged in.

Re: MC crashes and i'm still logged-in.

Before doing that, just try a new restart after having trashed user and application settings, if you are able to open it up this way you might also be able to deactivate before doing a new fresh install

Ok, but how do I trash the user and application settings?

In shared documents, open up your folder Media Composer settings and trash MC State , Site Settings and Site Attributes, they will be rebuilt when you open up Media Composer.

About user settings, just create a new user when you open up Avid

Re: MC crashes and i'm still logged-in.

    Thanks!, found it.

Things are getting worse, it now starts up and tells me:

" Unable to find the program data directory. The program will now close.

    H:\Avid Media Composer "

It's on the C: drive for sure, the only thing I did before this problem was importing an avi file from H: Which went well, after putting that on the timeline I de- activated the program.

Re: MC crashes and i'm still logged-in.

Your installation seem to be messed up, have you maybe customized it yourself ?

Media Composer should be installed on your OS drive, usually named C

Re: MC crashes and i'm still logged-in.

No, I did not do anything but importing an avi file.

I do have a dual boot system, but H:\ is not the drive that will be named C: when I boot up the other win7 install. (MC has it's own startup drive, learned that from AL )

But, I think I now have to reinstall anyway. (First finding out what made MC think it was on H:)

Do I have to call to Avid for a reset or someting like that? Or, because the system is nog changed, will I be able to re-activate MC ?

Re: MC crashes and i'm still logged-in.

Don´t really know what you have done, I have 4 separate physical bootdiscs myself , all of them named C, just to close down, plug out and plug in, if you have it all on one physical disc it sounds to me as a configuration problem on your system.

It all seems to be messed up for you now, I would recommend saving your bins to your Media drive or an external drive and do a clean OS and Media Composer install without any dual boots.

No, I have two 1 gig drives, in al diual boot system.  One for MC, because i'm afraid that other applications will interfere with MC . I cannot affort  an singel purpose machine fot editing. Don't know why it messedup this way either. But thanks for your help. Maybe I have to buy two drive bays to keep it all seperated.

Re: MC crashes and i'm still logged-in.

Well, while editing the typos in my previous reply the whole thing froze again. So it's not an MC problem I think.  Maybe the hard drive itself or windows. Thanks to dual boot I was able to get back here :)  Thanks.

You of course know that editing systems shouldn´t be used for internet surfing, there are plenty of cheap laptops on the market right now that could be used for netsurfing.

Re: MC crashes and i'm still logged-in.

Yes, that is one of the reasons  why I have a dual boot system, but it was a bit too much to go back and forward from the Mc to the "internet"system in this case. This is not gonna help either of us and were getting OT

    Thanks for your advice.

Re: MC crashes and i'm still logged-in.

I'd guess as RAM or harddrive issues.

But there are plenty of other issues that can cause these sort of problems.

The Registry sounds like it's become corrupt and if that's more than just the MC sections then it's a whole lot more work.

Are you sure there have been no hardware changes on the system? If not then I'd run some Malware and AV scans to see what they pick up.

Then a regsitry scan to see what's up there.

I'd re-install MC (and if need be contact Avid re activation but as your hardware setup is the same that maynot be an issue)

Check the Windows event logs as well.
