    Re: Media Composer 5.5

    Avid:
With updates to the Production Suite, included in all boxed versions of Media Composer, you can create stunning video effects, graphics, music, and more, and deliver content for web or disc play. This updated collection includes Boris Continuum Complete 7, Sorenson Squeeze 6.0.4, Avid FX 5.8.3, SmartSound SonicFire Pro 5.5.2, and Avid DVD 6.1.1.

The $149 upgrade price for v5.5 - Is this for an download version or the boxed set?

If it is for the download version then how much is the upgrade for the boxed set?

Since I already have ScriptSync (as an previously included feature throughout the versions - not seperatly purchased) what would be the price I have to pay to still have access to this functionality?

    Tnx,

afaik scriptsync that worked with 5.0 will not work with 5.5....or am i wrong here???

    EDIT:

    found it here:

What if I upgrade to Media Composer 5.5.1 will I receive a free upgrade then?

No. Your free ScriptSync license is only for use with Media Composer 5.0, Symphony 5.0, or NewsCutter 9.0. If you upgrade to an x.5 release, you must purchase ScriptSync 1.0..

    Re: Media Composer 5.5

    Lemuriatv:

This is something I don't understand. Engineering effort will be split (probably not equally) between 5.0 and 5.5. Does that mean there will a patch for 5.0 that will fix any bugs (not provide any new features) that were fixed in 5.5? Surely, this would be the next patch that is released for 5.0 users considering that 5.5 = 5.0 + bug fixes + new features?

I would have thought that it would have made sence from a support/engineering point of view, on this one occasion, to get the current 5.0 users up to 5.5 (for free) considering all the issues that people have had. In the long run, all that effort and support on 5.0 will cost money. Perhaps it would also lift Avid's image a little since its probaby lost a few points on the popularity scale...

I agree entirely.  From a business / engineering point of view it seems wasteful of resources to be developing bug fixes for 5.0 and 5.5.  AND from a customer relations point of view, given the poor patch performance (three issued and withdrawn) which has resulted in a lot of wasted time and frustration and COST to the user base, I feel strongly that 5.5 should be given FREE OF CHARGE as a thank you / apology / acknowledgement to the installed customer base.

That would generate a lot of goodwill towards AVID and free up enginerring & development time for AVID. A win-win.  It's not too late to make the bigger gesture Dave.

Doesn't this contitute a "dot release"? Normally free with most companies and while $149 may not be a lot I would have to say that it only makes MC5 look more of a beta release than it appeared to be at times.

This is how they've been doing it for the last few years.  They've been putting features and fixes into the x.0 and x.5 releases and charging for them, while the x.x.1 and other patch releases have been fixes only, and free of charge.

Essentially: added features = paid upgrade, fixes only = free patch.

Thx Dave and Todd fo what is mostly good news. Especially the upgrade price...

    Still I have some issues.

    A small qoute from:

    http://avid.force.com/pkb/LegacySearch?DocId=385855

    It says:

    Q. What about software fixes and updates that are not new features? Will my Media Composer 5.x or NewsCutter 9.x software be updated in the future?

A: Avid will continue to provide updates for bug fixes for Media Composer 5.5.x and NewsCutter 9.5.x software for a period of time after the final version is released.

I start being a tape recorder playing the same tune over and over againStick out tongue... but here goes.

How does a user practically know what the final version is of any MC release? For example can anyone say today that MC 5.0.3 is the final one? In reality only after the release of a new version are we aware that the previous release was probably the final release. So is my conclusion correct: from here on only patches for MC 5? Secondly what does " a period of time" mean? 3 months, 6 or a year? Instead of a time frame shouldn't the goal be that a certain functional level should be achieved for any release of MC?

Some forum users are, IMHO logically, saying they will first see how the development process will proceed before they will start using MC 5.5. While the upgrade price is a nice gesture towards all those that "jumped" into the MC 5, I do not read how Avid intends to inform its users better about new version releases and their functional enhancements. The fact that the moderators were not informed before the release does not point towards a better future considering communication.

That said, Todd, Dave and all others supplying links, many thx for supplying the desired info.

    Carl,

Surely the MC5.0 experience has not been what AVID have been doing for the past few years, that is releasing a very buggy program then compounding that with a series of buggy fixes.

I came to MC at the end of the life of Liquid mainly due to their rock solid reputation - for what i do, I could have easily gone to one of three other vendors for similar money, but i chose AVID because i expected GREAT product.

And, to repeat myself, it seems wasteful from AVIDs point of view to have people working on fixes for 5.0 and 5.5 at the same time

Exceptional circumstances sometimes warrant an exceptional response.  It take it that you are not suggesting that the MC5 roll out is the AVID norm?

Although $149 isn't a lot of money, it feels like we are being asked to pay for what we should have had in the first place.

    Rob:
Is there any chance that the snap to edit function will be fixed? I have posted on this problem on prevoius threads, since MC5 commenced it journey.

Aint that so true!  I really miss this function (that I had mapped to shift A and shift S).  All this backslapping and marketing crow for high end functions/features - sort the BASICS first guys.

Its really tough as I LOVE using the Smart Tools in facilities kit but will in no way destabilise my own V4 system at a cost.

I need to know 5 is good first with no steps back in functionality or reliability.  Its been a while now...

    Re: Media Composer 5.5

I am assuming that Avid will release their replacement to the

mojo-sdi before the end of the summer, whether this will

require an upgrade to mc6 to work or will play nice with mc5 or

mc5.5 is anyones guess. Also Avid if your reading this

I was just answering Dean's question about the difference between a patch release and a feature release.  I don't have any pull with regard to whether or not Avid should work on 5.0.x and 5.5 at the same time, or how much upgrades should cost, or whether or not this particular upgrade should be free or whether or not Avid intends to do a better job of releasing less buggy software in the future.
