Actually, I have both FCS 7.x running on my circa September 2009 vintage 24 inch iMAC(v9.1) running 64 bit Snow Leopard as well as my once upon an Avid certified HP Laptop PC and all is well (Sort of). I was thinking of installing my MC 4.0.5.x on my iMAC as well, which has 8 Gigs of DDR 3 System RAM with a 3.06 GHz Core 2 Duo CPU with 6MB of L2 Cache, and an nVidia GT 130 with 512 MB of graphics RAM. I can connect a FW 800 Raided drive to see how MC behaves. I have my dongle, but can I go back and forth between my current installation on PC and one installed on my iMAC ????

P.S. Avid should certify this Sony Vaio model if it works. It is exactly like the HP Elitebook and similar to the crazy expensive Dell Precision m6500 at exactly 1/3rd the price of the HP laptops and 1/6th of the Dell Precision M6500. Plus it has a standard HDMI out. The retarded HP's and Dell do not !

This discussion is definitely going off-topic, so I hate to perpetuate it, but I will say that the beauty of the Mac is that I can install and the Windows platform on it if I want. Then immediately work in the Mac environment. I can pick and choose which environment to use. Not easily accomplished on PC hardware.

Of course you can! I probably do it on average more than once a day between PC and a MacPro.  (Actually its much quicker than the software activation versions with all that deactivate / activate fuss)

    Re: MC5 interface settings gone?

Alright... for the record, here's my rant:  (!*%!@)

I've been cutting on Avid for 14 years now (since the original MC 6!) but I have some questions about the "new" MC5:

What's with the pastel colors? I like the pop-up clip color box but why do all the new colors look the same?

Why can't I go from one segment mode directly to the other without first de-activating the first one? I'm a keyboard guy and the ST is useless for me. When I click on a mode, I want to GO to that mode.

Why is the TC track now at the top like FCP? And why can't I bring it back to the bottom? Or even just remove it?  I'm working with two of them now (!)

Why do the advanced keyframes default to having the acceleration on at 100%?

and a BUG that I haven't seen mentioned here before:

Why is it that when I go back to a "film disolve" to change its duration, hitting the disolve key always reverts it back to a plain-jane disolve? It doesn't do that if I'm ADDING a new disolve (it keeps the previous settings) but if I step back into an old one, BANG! plain disolve.

I always love seeing avid come up with new tools, just don't take away the old ones - please!

p.s. I miss the scisors, the weight lifter & being able to chose the bevel style of the inteface's buttons. :-(

Oh, and I'm still waiting for MC6's fixes before upgrading my home system past MC4.

    So there.

You can do this. However, you need to run at least 5.0.3, IIRC. Go into the Timeline settings, and tick the box that says 'only have one segment tool active at a time'. After that, switching between segment modes works just like it used to work. Except for the fact that every time you launch the application the entire smart tool will be activated. You can either map the ST button somewhere or you can click the TC track or the top ruler to toggle it off (you need to have that option active in the timeline settings too).

Re: MC5 Interface Settings Referendum - PLEASE PARTICIPATE!

    Hi All,

Having been on Avid since NuBus around 94, dragged across from my online Ampex Suite screaming, I haved loved it ever since.

Personally buying Meridien, Adrenaline and now DX Nitris systems over the years. But V5 is killing a long love affair, people are leaving or threatning to on mass. I have to look seriously at this before upgrading again.

This can all go away by listening to people, by all means have your smart tools, stereo tracks (which drive me nuts in audio mixdown mode) and so on. But give people a customise option, or classic mode? And make sure it all works before release.

We all understand the need to continue software and hardware development. When it works it's great, and over the year it has been great, but when it doesn't, you are creating a marketing nightmare, that will take years to leave our memories.

Avid has always been the market leader, you are what we all know as professionals. Please keep it that way.

Add to that INTEL buying up 14% of avid's stock in the 90's and you have a lot more PC influence.

Again, I don't minimize, I just bring up the desktop, hiding all other apps. After that, I can easily bring up any open Finder window by clicking the folder stack in the taskbar.

This has been this way for me forever, so I don't get how MC5 has changed things.

    Re: MC5 interface settings gone?

Hi Job, one thing is to hide all the running apps, and another thing is to minimize a program: all the Windows applications, including MC up to version 4, can be minimized using the underscore button at the top right corner of the application itself, MC 5 doesn't stick to this standard, You may say that this is not a big problem, but as a matter of facts all of the many not-a-big-problem issues in MC 5 add up to make it a rather disappointing release.

We're roughly two months away from NAB, where Avid usually announces the next release, and we never had a reasonably well working MC 5, with the stupid-tool taking control of the application instead of me and plenty of minor issues addressed by more patches than ever before in Avid's history, patches that have introduced new issues rather than fixing the pending ones. I've been a very loyal Avid customer since MC 4 on the Quadra and I made a blind purchase of MC 5 forced by the Avid's "pushy" pricing policy: the more the delay in the purchase the bigger the price, but I also did it based on my previous experience, as every single new release was an improvement against the previous one, with some minor problems in the .0 release quickly fixed by a .1 update, this isn't been the case with MC 5; now even if I wasn't too upset, will I trust Avid enough to buy MC 5.5 or 6 or whatever they call it?

    No, you won't!

It is completely logical if you have worked with a tool professionally for 15 years you distrust anybody altering your tool without a coherent explanation why this is needed. And even the flexible minds will not trust him/her from then on if the altered tool also doesn't function properly, or is not an improvement over the previous tool.

If you do 99 things right and 1 thing wrong people tend to focus on this one error. And "lesson one" in such a situation is to admit your error as fast as possible hoping that "the world" will focus again on the future. But not Avid...

I've just read this list, and it is very good. I especially agree with the last point about revamping the effects (and losing the archaic effect nesting). Although I don't care about AMA, I know many do. If the author had mentioned "advanced" keyframes, I would have agreed with the article 100%.
