    Re: MC5 interface settings gone?

Yes I understand and agree somewhat with you but my comment is directed to those that want avid to stay like it is and just fix the bugs and a few requested features.

The problen I see avid facing is the battle between the high end users and the others. It seems that avid may need to have 2 markets and 2 products. They could have made a liquid avid out of avid liquid  for the middle end users but they have closewd this option (I think)

I am suer that avid users would have been happy with the liquid funcionalities adding some avid funcionalities to it

    cheers

    Brickwad:
I love working on Avid pre-MC5. I wish I could take advantage of all the great new things in Version 5, but I just can't.

Your opinion is shared. And this is the most mind-boggling thing for me... I actually like some of the non-timeline related changes, such as (somewhat) improved AMA functions, and things like MX02 video monitoring implementation for lower-end setups (bravo for third-party integration...more please!). But when they giveth, they taketh away. I describe the changes Avid made to actual editing as a butcher job.

It's never truly fair to assume things, but as a Mac user, my gut tells me this was a redesign done by PC techie guys - squeezing in much of the malformed user interface that PCs seem accustomed to while trying to implement a misinterpreted version of Final Cut Pro.

For years I have defended Avid against Final Cut Pro, drawing a clear line in the sand that said Avid was better for sheer speed in getting things done. But I really can't say that anymore.

After many months trying my best to edit in MC 5.x, I really am giving serious consideration to rolling back a version again. Despite the difficulty and time involved in doing this, I think I'll end up ahead of the game after cutting in 4.x for a while.

    Re: MC5 interface settings gone?

I am using the latest version 5.03.07 it works fine for my needs. I always work in DV and short projects so far no problem., My sony vaio f series with is the top end model, which means win 7 pro-8gb ram and 1gb nvidia 42 and a 7200 rpm hdd (soon ssd).  The only thing i have noticed are two white flashes everytime i play the pgm and source windows. but other than that all is ok

Make sure you don't have any tools or bin windows even slightly overlapping the composer source/record monitor window.

Nobody here asking for Avid to stay like it is, we'd like to be able to switch off new tools at wish, like we can already do with AMA, and changes being aimed to improve the software rather than seeing change for the sake of change. And talking of changes: how about no minimize of the software during renderings/import/export? What is the idea behind that? I can have a sound to alert me when a render completes, but what is the point if I can't leave the app?

Hi Luca: I have the same experience. I could be working in other apps while the slow boat to Antarctica renders go down.

Hi Ric: If you have the time could you try to edit something in HD (Maybe smoothing HDV ?) and tell me if you can import, edit, apply effects and export on your cool Sony Vaio Laptop PC, then PM me with the results ?

Well I can't, but I'm on Vista 64 and I see You're on Win7, perhaps that makes the difference. To be fully honest I can use the Start menu to run programs and Alt-Tab to other running programs, but no way MC 5 will minimize during render/export/import.

Same here.  During rendering, right-clicking on the AMC button in the taskbar doesn't do anything, and I can't click on the minimize button in the upper right corner, either.

I can, however, use other programs and switch in and out of them like normal with MC still running/rendering in the background, so I don't see what's the big deal.  Why would it be better if MC was minimized as opposed to running behind other programs without affecting their operation?

So now this is the fault of PC users eh? I really thought the editing world had moved past this kind of "Mac vs PC" mudslinging.

As a PC user I can tell you that none of Avid's "enhancements" make my "malformed user interface" work any better than it did in MC4.

So now this is the fault of PC users eh? I really thought the editing world had moved past this kind of "Mac vs PC" mudslinging.

As a PC user I can tell you that none of Avid's "enhancements" make my "malformed user interface" work any better than it did in MC4.

I think you're stretching my words. I'm not blaming PC users as a group, nor saying that the PC platform somehow got a solid piece of software while the Mac didn't. I don't say stuff like this just for the sake of "mudslinging". In the past, I have witnessed Avid developers abandon traditional Mac interface standards in favor of PC standards. From keyboard combinations to the ubiquitous "limit filenames to 27-characters" implementation, to nearly dropping the Mac platform altogether, Avid has shown a less-than-favorable opinion of the Mac users.

But more to the point, if you take a look at the interface of Media Composer, you'll find that button interactions, selection tools, window appearances, and ways it displays information can vary widely from function to function. In the Mac world, there is a much greater emphasis on standardization of interface protocols and hardware. In the PC world, thanks to a variety of manufacturers, cards, and accessories that are used, standardization is definitely not its strong point.

So, I stand by my comment. Avid's history near-elimination of Mac support leads me to believe that design and development is done with a PC mindset. And lessons could be learned in terms of Mac standardization and interface design. It would have bit off things like the SmartTool right at the get-go, and we'd be looking at much easier navigation overall.

    Re: MC5 interface settings gone?

Ciao Carl, what if I need to reach an icon on the desktop? Yes there are workarounds, but why MC 5 does not behave like any other Windows application? And talking of renderings, why the p/t switches in the progress bar window do not work anymore like they always used to? What is this enhancincing?
