Kenton.VanNatten:All I want is for the Keyframe Manipulator Tool to not be a part of the SmartTools. Give me that and everything will be fine for me.

I try contribute some of my questions/opinions to that awesome thread. I refer to 5.0.3.5(mac) and 5.0.3(PC since I having Problems applying the 5.0.3.7r Patch, but anyway)
#first: I'm very happy that the avid community is as active and open to critical discutions like these. Since I upgraded to MC5 I kind of seesaw changes between being frustratet and getting used to or even like the changes.
#Smarttool: i understand the problems some have, and also I have in part with the wierd behavoir of the ST. I think at least there is some little good in it: the concept of "contextual behavior": Trimm Tool being autoselectet near an Edit, autoselection of Overwrite or Splicemode by upperTrack/lowerTrak... it's not too bad off a concept and i got very quick used to that, but yes: THIS SHOULD BE OPTIONAL AND: its seems implemented incomplete and unprecicly. The Best would be to have one Tool at a Time as default! Everything else User selectable!
#correct me if I'm wrong: I think in earlier versions i could configure Locators not to interrupt playing the timeline when adding them (no Popup-Window). This seems to be gone (or where is it hinding?)Why?
#is it just me or ...? The Effect-Window of the Time/Speedeffects does not save its Position by the Tool-settings. It never stays in place but in the way.
#Stereotracks: Nice idea, yes, but (like many of the inventions) seems not thought to the end. There has to be an easy way to put any clips into to a stereo- or multi- Timelinetrack without having to manually modify a Clip in the Bin to be marked as "multi- or stereotrack".
#RTAS trackeffects: cool but overdue - I've waited so long for this! Here you whre listening, thank you Avid. My Problem: i cannot save any Configurations of effects or even can i copy/paste them to other tracks - thats really annoing to manually set each track (am I wrong?), Or simply the Concept of "Insert" Modules does not work? For Example: If i customize , lets say "insert B Mono Reverb" on Track A3, then apply the same "Insert B Reverb..." on Track A4 the same Insert is reset to its default. Really annoing, or do i not understand the concept of it?
#Clip Coloring: why is it not possible to color a bunch of Clips in batch (at once)? am i wrong? would be a timesaver!
#Color Pallette: the defaults of the Palette are really missing some usable tones. Please make that the System Color Picker or a User configuareable Palette!
#Bin Coloring: fully agree on the bin-color problem, i was happily surprised to read here, that many editors use to color even the Project Window like i did to find it quickly, which leads me to GUI Questions below...
#last not least: do i have to buy Version 6 for things that where advertised to be working in Version 5?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
additional:
#GUI: not part of that "Referendum" and not specific to MC5.0.x.x but all of MC: i would like to point some of you to a interesting thread: "GUI overhaul needed" http://community.avid.com/forums/t/88258.aspx?PageIndex=1
I do not really like the concept of free floating windows or more precisely: how this is done in Avid MC!
Customisation as a Principle is good so far, but i miss a kind of automatism that arrange my bins and tools automaticly when i open/close them without switching and configurating "Tool Sets". The Toolset Selection is to restrictet, personally my toolsets have to be rearranged nearly each project since I'm doing very different stuff! Would be better to have a magnet effect or some other automatism to save screen real estate and not having window over window over window over window overlaying each other. And no: the Superbin is not the perfect solution. It's nice, but not what i mean. I want to say: The GUI shure is usable but sometimes a Timewaster. For Example: While not totaly ideal for editing, fixed Screenlayouts can be a huge Timesaver because i know where everting is and ever will be (look at all the autodesk, quantel or even adobe CS4/CS5 stuff). But this is going too far for this thread, sorry,
Thank you all for your contributes and help! hauke
The whole audio mixing process inside MC is a let down.
I repeat what I have already said and other people feel it too.
MC has some powerful features wrapped inside an old perception of things.

haukez:Locators not to interrupt playing the timeline when adding them (no Popup-Window). This seems to be gone (or where is it hinding?)
You need to set that option. Open the Locators Tool, and from the hamburger menu to the bottom left of that tool, select 'Disable popups when playing' (or always).
haukez:why is it not possible to color a bunch of Clips in batch
haukez:do i have to buy Version 6 for things that where advertised to be working in Version 5?
haukez:The Toolset Selection is to restrictet
Having fixed windows only would make me change career in a minute.
Job ter Burg:You need to set that option. Open the Locators Tool, and from the hamburger menu to the bottom left of that tool, select 'Disable popups when playing' (or always).
exactly this is the dialog i am missing. look at the screenshot, there is no hamburger menu.
Job ter Burg: haukez:why is it not possible to color a bunch of Clips in batch Selecting the clips in the bin, then choose Bin->Set Clip Color works for me.
i am used to set the colors within the bins "color" collumn wich allows just one clip to be set at a time. Feels more intuitive to me, i did'nt get the idea to look in the menu. But, yes, your suggestion would be a workaround if it works - thank you very much!!!
Job ter Burg: haukez:do i have to buy Version 6 for things that where advertised to be working in Version 5?Which things exactly are you referring to?
Sorry, I confess to being unprecise and maybe untrue in terms of the "advertising" at that point and it is often bad to to say something in general because it tends to be unfair in detail. But i wanted somehow express my gerneral feeling about MC5, and i'm not the only one i guess, having paid for something that claimed to be so much better and helping me but has created new problems by introducing the advertised new features. AMA - cool, shure, but i am still transcoding everything to DNxHD if it has to be reliable. Should have known better.
Job ter Burg: haukez:The Toolset Selection is to restrictetHave you tried using Workspaces? They can also be set to not update, meaning that invoking a workspace has the tools right where you want them.
Again: confession: No. because i allways thougt it is the concept like having different desktops on Linux Machine (could be wrong) and if so, there would be the same Problem: I have to set up, maintain, remember where my desired Workspace/Toolset is and which one i use now. But your suggestion leads me to really try this feature, maybe its the solution - so, thank you for pointing me to!
You need to go to the locators menu in the tools menu to find the hamburger to disable locator popup. One thing I wish was that there was a way to apply it to ALL new projects as a default.

Yes! there it is! Thank you! Its not gone. I've searched it under the Settings-Tab. Wouldn't be better to have all possible Settings of MC being represented somewhere in the Settings tab? Someone even never know of such a feature.
Edit: Strange, under Mac Version 5.0.3.5 i can see that "Locators" Button I was missing and what opens the "Locators Tool" with that Hamburger menu. But under Version 5.0.3 on my PC (see the Screenshot above and below) it is gone... thats why i got confused. anyway not big of a deal but irritating

You can arrange windows on the screen, including sizes, including timeline settings, and save that as a workspace. Duplicate the workspace in the Settings, then change that second workspace to a different arrangement. Repeat as desired. Then you can assign the W1, W2 etc. keys from the Command Palette to keys or buttons. So you can set up a workspace for capturing, editing, mixing, color correction. Toolsets are just a few preset workspaces. You can make many more.
Haukez,
Here is some more information on setting up a workspace

Is it just me or does the "disable locators pop-up always" have to be set for every new project? Seems like that can't be saved to any user settings.
Wow, I tried to read this thread, but I could only get about halfway through before I got disgusted and tired. Imagine what the Avid design team must feel like reading this.
But, just to make sure they know that there are many out there who wish they would work overtime and holidays to rewrite the Avid code, here is my list of major gripes as of this moment:
[1] Get rid of SmartTools, or at least let me turn it off and remove it from my timeline COMPLETELY
[2] Give me back my old-style color picker, for bin backgrounds, timeline tracks, and especially clips
[3] Make "Advanced" keyframes an option, not the default... and don't make "bezier" the default mode. Bleah.
[4a] Give me back my automatically-inserted first-and-last-frame keyframes when I add an effect.
[4b] In case you missed it... Give me back my automatically-inserted first-and-last-frame keyframes when I add an effect!!!
[5] Give me back all of the appearance customization options that you stole
[6] Give me the ability to mix frame rates without removing the motion effect from my tools
[7] If you're going to steal the functionality of the traditional motion effect to mix frame rates, at LEAST don't wipe out my ability to re-enter the motion editor just because I rendered the timeline (thus eliminating the "green dot").
[8] Let me match-frame into an alpha channel clip. You know what it's called. You know where it's stored. You know where the media is. Don't tell me you can't do it like you can any other clip!
[9] Update your import windows. Show me what file is being imported, how many are left, etc.
[10] Give me REAL color correction
[11] Again, give me REAL color correction
[12] Fix your ancient title tool so that my fonts don't get completely realigned when I change it by one point size.
[13] Changing sequence start timecode... Why the he__ did you think it was cool to make me select "Sequence Report", change the timecode, then hit "Cancel" to do it correctly. Seriously?
[14] Put back the segment lift/overwrite extract/splice-in buttons!
[15] If you're going to tell me that I can edit native H264 files, then I should at least be able to edit them without absolute crippling stuttering and painfully slow operations. Talk about bait and switch.
[16] What? No .AAF when using AMA clips? Can you say "transcode it no matter what"?
[17] Why is the "Smart Tool" so huge, but the things I could really use, like Mute and Solo are microscopic targets?
[18] Too tired to continue right now... needless to say there is more.

Yes, that post was quite the gem. I remember reading that at the time, then comparing it to my real-world observations. There was quite a disconnect between the "we beta tested it and people thought it was great" messaging coming from Avid versus the people I know who use it, but weren't beta team members. I haven't found one Avid editor yet who thinks 5.x was a step in the right direction. They continue to lament the features in 4.x that they used often, that 5.x subsequently removed or altered negatively.
I suppose it's the job of the Avid development management to try and put as positive a spin on the release as possible, but we are a pretty tough audience to "spin", as it is our bread and butter. I have honest hopes that Avid becomes something better with each release. But they really need a crash course in user operations and environments. They need some lessons on interface design and implementation that is far more artistic and functional that where they are going. Right now it feels like the crew building Avid was pulled from a PC geek squad without too much concern for true integration, consistency, or aesthetics... It's not exactly the luxury, best-in-class editing environment they could be. I have no doubt they have reams of papers from countless users that describe in great detail the nagging things that need to be smoothed over. They just need to sit down and do them.
