Upgrade to Sorenson Squeeze 6.5: Benefits/Problems?

What experience do forum members have with Sorenson Squeeze 6.5 used with MC5.0? Creative Cow sent an offer from Sorenson to upgrade from Squeeze 5.0 to 6.5 for $199 until November 26 (claims quite a savings). So even though I have not even used Squeeze 5.0 included with Liquid to MC production pack I would like opinions to help me determine if this $199 is a deal I should not pass up (for later use primarily)?

I searched forum and last post I found was January 26, 2010 saying Squeeze 6 was not qualified for used with Avid MC and it appeared there were problems using Squeeze 6 with MC at that time.

However, now Sorenson website cites 6.5 designed for use with Avid MC (and other NLE) and several benefits if you upgrade from 5.0 to 6.5 including faster encoding.  Acknowledge Sorenson "bias" but Creative Cow member also had pretty favorable review of 6.5 vs Squeeze 5.0.

Question is could 6.5 benefits apply to me (enough to spend $199)? At moment it does not appear integrated workflow or broadcast benefits mentioned for Squeeze 6.5 would apply to me. I am basically just advanced hobbyist for fun and also doing some volunteer editing (Liquid was perfect for me) but when I move into HD (maybe with DSLR from Canon or Sony) I wonder if Squeeze 6.5 encoding and maybe some other features will benefit me working in MC 5 environment?

Re: Upgrade to Sorenson Squeeze 6.5: Benefits/Problems?

I received the same email from Sorenson and it was somewhat misleading I think. It stated :

"Upgrade to Squeeze 6.5 from ANY previous full version of Squeeze for only $199!"

Actually if you have Squeeze 6 which comes with MC 5 Production Suite the upgrade is free. It might pay just to buy whole Suite 5 from Avid....

Good info, Dan. With all the deals, rebates, upgrades and so forth one can lose track.  However, I only have the production suite which came with the Liquid to MC4 offer and it came with Sorenson Squeeze 5.  I used the "free" download upgrade to go from MC4 to MC5.  I will look at Avid options to buy the "new" Production Suite (for MC5).  Dennis

    Hi Tomas

Like many others I have Squeeze 5.  What would you say the main benefits of upgrading to 6.5 have been?

I have to admit that I hardly remember Squeeze 5 but from bad memory I think that it is that the H 264 part  has been improved and faster rendering speeds, I might forget one or a couple of things..

Re: Upgrade to Sorenson Squeeze 6.5: Benefits/Problems?

I have just taken the upgrade offer and installed 6.5 - the new features that I have found to be beneficial are:

    1. Better structure for pre-set settings (i.e there are now settings for devices, Discs, Editing, Formats, Web) etc.

    2. There seem to be a number of Avid specific settings that I have yet to try

    3. My best discovery was that the Editing tab's preset of "DV Stream" produces a good quality file in a format that Liquid seems to like -I have consistently battled to get MC5 output into Liquid effectively, and have never found the best way to convert the Mov file to a format preferably AVI but DV will do and to use that as import into Liquid.

Normally I encode for DVD using Avid DVD / DVD IT HD but I am going to try Sorenson Mpeg2 / DVD encode preset and see what output that gives

Other than that I cannot verify if the encoding is better or faster or more up to date than 5 but given that I spent money on the upgrade I choose to believe that it is vastly superior.

Neil, I like your "vastly superior" approach to purchases (a great antidote when I am confronted with any lingering buyers remorse for purchases I have made). Plus the great savings you got adds even more to the "vastly superior" mantra. Enjoy, Dennis

Re: Upgrade to Sorenson Squeeze 6.5: Benefits/Problems?

Other than the upgrade to Squeeze 6, what other upgrades are included in the current production suite that weren't included in the MC4 Boxed edition?  In other words, if Squeeze 6 is all you get for $295, it would be cheaper to just get the update from Squeeze for $199.

Denny, if you maybe thought of buying a new computer, maybe a laptop, it might be handy to use the SW licensing options for deactivating and activating and also have one more bundle with new fresh license codes on the other system.

Re: Upgrade to Sorenson Squeeze 6.5: Benefits/Problems?

Haze, To clarify, although I bought MC when Avid dropped Liquid I still primarily use Liquid for SD and have not used Squeeze in MC.  In light of savings provided by Sorenson upgrade offer my question was forward planning for when I migrate to HD and MC5--I wondered if forum members using MC5 for HD work found Squeeze 6.5 that much better than Squeeze 5.0.  If 6.5 was much better then I would spend $199 today rather than $499 or so for 6.5 in future.  Dennis

With 140 euros you get both TMPGEnc Xpress and Authoring Works.

When you try those, you wont' change them for anything else.

Their quality and speed is very good.

You will see then, that Squeeze is a way overpriced.

    I never use it anymore.

Re: Upgrade to Sorenson Squeeze 6.5: Benefits/Problems?

I agree with George, Squeeze is very expensive, the TmpGe products are more modestly priced, and product improvements are often and usually not charged for.

Although Authoring Works is not as elegant in some ways as Dvdit (Avid DVD) is is a solid program that works well, and I use both.
