16:9 PAL sequence exports with 4:3 metadata

    Hello

    Does anyone get this problem?

When I export a 16:9 SD PAL timeline (QT reference / QT Avid Codecs) the metadata exported with the file says it is 4:3 and so when I bring the file into AVID DVD the output is displayed as 4:3

No matter what I do in MC5 (16:9 Pixels) or in AVID DVD -(making the project widescreen), it always defaults to an AVID DVD aspect ratio of 4:3

(I cannot say for sure but I am sure that this was not the case in MC4)

Looking at the help it appears that this is feature is not working for me:

Display Aspect Ratio Defines an image size for the video you want to export: Native, 4:3, or 16:9. This lets you control the display format without modifying the source file.
This option creates metadata that is stored with the QuickTime movie. Some applications, such as the QuickTime Player, can interpret this metadata and scale the image at display time.
This option is useful for QuickTime reference movies because you do not modify the source files of referenced movies. For example, you can create two different QuickTime reference movies with different display aspect ratios that use the same referenced source files.
The menu selections depend on how you open the Export Settings dialog box and whether you have done a prior export.

    Thanks

To make it work at Avid DVD, after you drop the clip at the timeline (of Avid DVD)

goto movie tab and click on 4:3 at the aspect ratio.

It will ask you if you want it to be 4:3.

    Click yes.

Then click again 16:9 and it will ask you again.

    Say yes again.

Then Avid DVD will see it as 16:9...

    George

Thanks - this does not seem to work as although the screen becomes a 16:9 screen the video stays 16:9 with black bars down the sides.

Are you talking about the Movie tab that has the radio buttons for 4:3 and 16:9 (if so I cannot make it 4:3 when it is already 4:3)

    Thanks

Yes try to hit the 16:9 tab and then back again the 4:3.

It works the other way around.

Re: 16:9 PAL sequence exports with 4:3 metadata

In my experience, Avid DVD always defaults to 4:3 on all movies. Just change the setting to 16:9.

The simulation may still be 4:3, but the final DVD will play 16:9

Re: 16:9 PAL sequence exports with 4:3 metadata

We experience(d) the same problem on all our machines. AvidDVD 6.1.1 - latest version if I'm correct - does not solve the problem. You can click around like a madman, but won't solve the problem.

Here is what we do with PAL 16:9 sequences. But you'll need Quicktime PRO (small investment).

    - click sequence in MC and export QTR

    - open the sequence in Quicktime Pro and hit CTRL + J - (opening the features) and select the video track

    - hit tab 3 showing the image features. You will most probably see that size = 720 x 576.

    - change it to 1024 x 567 and save the movie.

Now you'll see that AvidDVD detects a 16:9 sequence rightaway, which is of course quite obvious.

Re: 16:9 PAL sequence exports with 4:3 metadata

Thanks for all the replies ... This is why this forum is so valuable!

George - unfortunately your recommendation does not work - I can click between 4:3 and 16:9 to my hearts content the video stays 4:3

Adam - your suggestion did work - the burned DVD plays fine in 16:9 on a DVD player so it seems that although the movie preview in Avid DVD shows 4:3 it does burn to 16:9 - thanks (Not sure if this was the case previously or if I never looked at the movie tab before but anyway...)

Reginald - thanks for the workaround but if the final video is 16:9 then there is no need for me to change the metadata with QT pro.

Once again thanks to all who offered advice and help - greatly appreciated

Problem does appear to be resolved.

    Regards

There is a way to get it to play 16:9 in simulation mode, it involves a couple of settings (in preferences I think) but it's not obvious exectly what they do. I'll have a look at my settings tomorrow see if I can figure it out again. It bugged me for ages till I got it working (more by chance that anything else).

Re: 16:9 PAL sequence exports with 4:3 metadata

In the "preferences"/Simulation tab, set your aspect ratio to "4:3 Letterbox". This will open a 4:3 simulation window, but display your menu and movies in 16:9.

    Best option I've figured out.
