I am trying to add somE 3D extruded text floting in space over a background which is already a chromakey composite. V1 = background with Avid Pan & Scan effect. V2 = Blue screen footage with a stack of BCC chromakey effects (Chromakey, matte choker, color balance) V3 = Avid FX Title matte.
The first time I tried this was over a copy of my full timeline - it was working, but ridulously slowly - i was waiting for upto 30 seconds for any keystroke I made to be acknowleged on screen.
I am working in 1080/25p DNxHD 120, so I figured I was asking too much of my PC, so I made a video mixdown of my background composite (V1 & V2) and created a new sequence with that on V1 and then I thought I could work on my Avid FX on V2. No dice, in fact for some reason when I add my Avid FX to V2 it seems to invert the video on V1 so I get a negative image. And still my computer practically locks up.
Can anyone suggest what I am doing wrong or what the issue might be (and a solution if possible).

PS Im using system 2 in my specs

Hi MattB,
In terms of the inverted colors, I can't really help off the top of my head. But in terms of the Avid FX locking up the comp, I've always found that any sort of extruded text needs to be rendered before being looked at in the timeling. I've managed to crash Avid a few times just trying to play the extruded text without rendering it, let alone editing with it. Hope this helps!

OK - so the inverted background image was due to me choosing the Avid FX title Matt Filter, not the regular one - so that has answered that.
Next - I decided to switch to BCC extruded text filter, which was looking fantastic until I noticed that there were no dots in the 'i's. Tried another bit of text and there were no 'i's at all - just a space where it should go. They are there in the text editor window but not in the rendered video. The font I am using is Tondo, which is a bought font, so I changed to the standard Verdana - same thing; no dots on 'i's, 'j's, question marks or exclamation marks also no apostrophies or quotation marks.
When I first launched the filter I got some open GL warning that something wasn't quite adequate, but that the system passed all 'critical' tests (didnt note the precise wording and it hasn't appeared since) Is this down to my system (system 2 in my specs) not being man enough or does this mean that BCC Extruded text is actually useless?
Has anyone else made the same discovery?
The Open GL warning was to do with me running two monitors at 1920x1200 'dualview' resolution, which apparently doesn't work for Boris (BCC). If I configure as horizontal span (3840 x 1200) I no longer get the warning.
Still can't get the dots to show up though!
Bump
Can anyone comment/confirm the strange behaviour I observed in BCC extruded text where there are no dots on i's, j's, question marks etc.
Matt,
The issue could be with your ATI video card. Do you have access to an nVidia card that you could try? MC sometimes has issues with ATI cards.
Denny
The system I am using has a Nvidia Quadro FX1800 - if you look at my sys specs it is listed as system 2.
By way of 'bumping' this back up the list I thought I'd go over my problem again.
Firstly, I am using 'System 2' in my specs - i.e. Dell precision 690 workstation, Nvidia Quadro FX1800 graphica card with the specified Avid driver, QT 7.6.6, Windows XP SP3 with 4GB ram. I also now have a Matroi MX02 mini, which I need to add to my specs at some point.
I'm fairly new to MC (from liquid 7.2), but have jumped-in at the deep end with a little blue-screen sequence for one of my clients (there is no better way to learn than by committing to a proper job). Overall the experience has been very good - I have learned a great deal and certainly am now longer daunted by the workflow of MC.
Now the problem. I needed to add some bullit-point text graphics to the video, by the side of my presenter's left shoulder, overlaid on the chromakey background, which was itself a Avid Pan and zoom treatment of a high res jpeg image. My idea was to put 3 lines of 3D extruded text gently rotating in space rather like a the elements of a child's mobile. I started off in Avid FX, but wasnt getting the look I wanted, then I saw one of Douglas's tutorials on BCC 3d extruded text and thought that looked the job.
To begin with launching BCC effects editor for 3D extruded produced a warning text box telling me that something wasnt up to spec for OpenGL, and giving the option to accept (may render) or decline (may not render). I managed to stop this by changing my FX1800 card settings from Dual-view to Horizontal-span, presumeably requiring less GPU recourses.
I created my effects quite successfully using my client's official font (Tondo, which is a licensed font that I had to purchase), until I noticed that none of the 'i's' in my text had their dots on.
So I started doing some tests:1 video mixdown of the chroma-key composite so that my system wasnt tied-up trying to assemble all the bits real-time, 2 swapped tondo for verdana3 made some captions using the whole character set and noticed that all dots were missing (on characters and punctuation), also missing were apostrophies, quotation marks, commas and full-stops. (all visible in the text editoe window)
I have assumed that something is awry between the graphics card / memory/ drivers / lack of RAM and have since tackled the graphics i a more traditional way, but would appreciate other opinions or a definative answer if someone has one.

Matt, I will take a look at this tomorrow.
Right now it is 10.00pm here and I am heading towards my futon soon.
You have this problem with Tondo and Verdana.Do you mind trying a few other fonts and see if the same thing is happening.
Can you also check what type of fonts you are using - TTF, OTF or what?
Am I correct in assuming you are using BCC 6?

To answer your questions Douglas:-
Tondo is a TrueType (OpenType) font created and licenses by Dalton Maag and Verdana is the system font (also TrueType (OpenType)) by Microsoft.
Yes it is BCC 6 (the version that came with MC4 upgrade from Liquid offer)
The same effect happens with arial - however, with a bit of time to experiment I have some more discoveries. (I have some screen-grabs, but I can't work out how to attach them properly)
It seems to be dependant on size (and they say it doesn't count). Tondo at 30pt displays none of the dots, quotation marks, apostrophies as described. Change to Verdana and the apostrophies and quotation marks suddenly appear, (but still no dots). Change Verdana to Arial, same thing. Increase point size to 48pt from 30 pt, no change. Increase point size to 72 point and voila dots are all there.
So it seems (on my machine at least) that the size of the type is important, and if certain elements of the text get too small they just disappear. The problem is that 30pt text isn't that small. My floaty text effect was looking fantastic and perfectly legible until I noticed the lack of dots on the 'i's.
I assume this probably means that I will have to be more realistic about the capabilities of my computer in future.
Hello Matt
Sorry I dont have a definitive answer, but you could raise this with the BorisFX support desk here - they are pretty good at working through these issues with Avid FX and BCC
Hope this works out for you

Thanks Matt,
I will not be at my editing computer until later. However I will test a little first then I will send Boris support an additional question on the topic. If you do/ have done the same (as Neil suggested) then I guess they will have to take notice and reply soon.
I have now been able to confirm your findings with BCC 3D extruded text. The dots disappeared when I used a very small font size. Now taking steps to relay the information to Boris.
The Support request I sent to Boris had the following Video attached.
Maybe you would like to see it.

I promised Matt in another thread to do a test, had a multicam to edit first, very good that you did it before me Douglas, I just confirmed the behaviour this morning and I might also have some other ways to report it direct to Boris.
Another related thing might be that you never should use to small letters for text, they will not look good at the finished project
