Read this at the cow. Having purchased from avid after april 12, do you think we qualify?
Boris Continuum Complete 7 FxPlug for Apple Final Cut Studio and Apple Final Cut Express and Boris Continuum Complete 7 AVX for Avid editing and finishing systems are scheduled for release later in 2010. Customers who purchase Boris Continuum Complete 6 FxPlug or Boris Continuum Complete 6 AVX as of April 12, 2010 will receive a free upgrade to Version 7.
Hope so
RC
Unless you purchased Boris Continuum Complete 6 FxPlug or Boris Continuum Complete 6 AVX from Boris or as a standalone product, I don't see how anyone who purchases Avid MC would qualify... but I could be wrong on this.

Nope! I think you are correct.
The upgrades apply only to BCC AVX bought from Boris (or a Boris dealer) at the regular price. For an upgrade from BCC 6 to BCC 7 via Avid, you will have to wait until it is included in a future Productivity Pack and then buy the new pack. Still a lot cheaper than via Boris as it also would probably include any newer versions of Squeeze etc.The only thing you need now is patience.

PS. By the way, a thought that crosses my mind from time to time. This is addressed to all readers.......How many people who are continually asking, "When can I get the latest update of e.g. Avid FX or BCC AVX filters", can actually make use of all the stuff they have in the earlier versions?I know that I have only scratched the surface of BCC6....... so, other than 20 new filters, I still have about 190 old ones to learn!

Douglas,
I couldn't agree with you more regarding the usability of existing filters in Boris. The depth of modern high end programs make it a continual learning expreience, which I for one, truly enjoy. It is at times frustrating, but never the less, a good mental challenge is a good thing. When I have exhausted the filters in the current program I will look to update. The flip side of the coin for me would be if Boris had simplified the interface and made the filters simpler to use. That would be a game changer.
Denny
Denny,
Are you speaking of Avid FX or BCC?
The interface for BCC is limited to what Avid can do in the effect editor but I can certainly pass along any complaints/constructive criticism of the Avid FX/Boris Red interface.

I am talking about BCC. I find the user interface to be confusing and not that intuitive, which makes the learning curve steep. On the otherhand if one uses the presets available in most of the filters, it is fairly straight forward. It is the application of the parameters that is the confusion part.
If there is something specific that confuses you maybe I can help you or point you to something that can help you?
Right now there are two areas of difficulty.
1. The Boris Graffitti which is in the Avid FX area, and
2. Motion tracking and integrating it with other effects.
If you could point me to some tutorials in this area, it would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
1. There arean't many Graffiti tutorials per say but there are Boris Red tutorials that can be found here (http://www.borisfx.com/videos/RED/) Graffiti is just the text features of Red/AvidFX.
Douglas also has an array of text tutorials using Avid FX which would employ the features used in Graffiti. You can find those in the list at the link below.

2. Motion tracking with what exactly? BCC? A specific filter?
Motion tracking with a paint effect where I have a black channel with a transparent cutout for a spotlight effect that I wanted to track a talent show with. I finally figured it out, but there was a lot of trial and error involved (maybe just inexperience). Perhaps there was a better choice of filters available to achieve the effect I wanted? What might you suggest?

I don't believe you are - I contacted Boris yesterday to see if I could legally sell my Boris FX, Grafitti & RED as I would have most if not all (is RED in the Production suite?) which incidentially you can't - bit disappointing really and quite a bit of wasted cash but while I was sending them an email I asked them about the BCC7 upgrade and they confirmed that bundled products are not eligiable.

There are a couple ways you could do it I guess. The way you are doing it is certainly valid.
depending on what you want for the look of the spotlight you could use the BCC wirness protection filter. You can set the area shape and effect method. One of the options is brightness/contrast whic allows you to highlight an area like a spotlight.
The great thing about this filter is it does include the motion tracker so you could track a person or object with it.
Matt,
Thank you for the input it has been very valuable. I will look further into the Red tutorials for Graffitti (Text) functions over the weekend when I have some time.
Not a problem, I'm always around if you have a question.
There is also the BCC Spotlight filter. It is found under BCC Lights. It includes a motion tracker.I have never used it before, but I took a quick look and found it to be quite easy to use.
