I've just downloaded the Beta.

Before I try it out on my PC, have any users/testers had any problems with the required Matrox codecs when using MC?

Flooding my PC with codecs that may or may not cause problems with MC is not really something that I want to do.

No problems at all with the Matrox codec, I've had them already installed on my system along with the Aja codecs and some others well before installing the Lightworks beta; make sure You download the patched version.

I am glad that the community is mot only a plact to learn and grow our skill but it has enough resources to make us grow to be a better human being.

Well, it wasn't meant that way. simply put, one might not particularly like a system once they have tried it, no matter it's capabilities. Not that someone was not capable of the system. So, I get where that might sound harsh.

Really, you should download the latest version and give it a try. Most of what you don't like is available now. I think you would be surprised at what it can do, editing wise. Give it a try, come on over to the DS google group and you will find a wealth of knowledge at your fingertips, ready to answer your questions.

Ditto... I have been messing with LW for the few days as well...and, it definately has some basic functional issues and it is NOT stable - at all.

There are some really good UI parts to LW... but, for the most part... the fact that it is not stable defeats any of it's good UI advantages.

I seriously hope no one here was actually thinking of using this product for "real" editing.  New product in early beta....stay away for now, but it will be interesting to watch.

Tom, thank You for the kind reply, nicer than mine, and thank You for proving me wrong! A few years ago I was given a DS system from a broke client as a form of payment: he had no cash to pay me otherwise; I played with it for a while, and used it to colour correct a few things cut on MC; I'm sure that the latest version has to be better than my ageing DS, and may give it a try.

Hi NICKB, I simply find MC to be leaning itself more toward editing than DS does, DS has far superior colour correction, masking tools, compositing, and effects, but when it comes to flexibility I find DS to be more "square", so to speak; take the inability to load sequences in the source monitor for example, if working on a feature film broken in reels, when one has to join the reels for a screening it is not as easy as with MC. You may argue that I'm not as skilled on DS as I'm on MC, and I also own an outdated DS, don't even remember the release, but it was "almost current" back in 2005, when I've had it second hand, which is why it's taking the dust, and the older it gets the less I use it, the less I use it the less I get fluent with it, the less I'm fluent the less I can appreciate it, and so on... but if DS is shipped with a copy of MC there must be a reason after all.

Hi Luca, just to clarify something. When you say you can't load sequences in the source monitor, are you talking about the currently open sequence? If so, that may have been an issue in early releases, but is no longer the case. Other sequences can certainly be loaded in as well. Are you talking about loading subsequences like you can on Symph/MC? If so, there is a minor workaround for that.

LW is not ready for prime time... and, not really sure if it ever will be...

But, LW has some great potential to be used a an organizational tool for pre-editing for rough cuts (and less as a "real" editing application). 

It's user interface would be perfect as a pre-editing application.  It's story board-like UI, drag and drop and effective use of dual monitors area is something that I have not seen any editing application since Liquid (and, even it is inferior to LW's in this area).  Unfortnately, if you can even get it to consistently export or import certain important/common file formats... LW become irrelevant as an application.

Wow what a statement

I have been editing network tv shows for the past 15 years on lightworks and i am not the only one!

Loads of big features have also been cut on it, so yes it is a real editor.

As to this open source version i think you need to have the right mindset 'a developers mindset' and that you enjoy tech problems and not see a crash as a negative but umn why did it crash how can we fix it attitude, however the underlying code has been very stable for years so this version has a good chance of being sorted.
