Hi Guys, just got back from the joint compositing commitee meeting in Stockport and thought I would give you a heads up of the results.
This years prohibited effects are as follows
Dips to black
Timewarping of crane shots accompanied by "whooshing"
Crash zooms as a transition
Lens flares as a transition
and inappropriate blur dissolves
Also we have decided that this years flashback tone is Magenta.
Obviously for non union editors and compositors this is just for guidance but the prohibition is binding for unionised members and the neccesary disciplinary action will be taken for those found violating this code of conduct.
Regards
Ian
Oh, well... That's going to have a pretty big impact on all the promos I've been onlining lately.
Thankfully the flare-out/glow transition is still okay.

There goes just about every Discovery, History, and TLC show - I think even "Biggest Loser" utilized most of these techniques this past season.
With regard to Timewarped crane/jib shots with a SFX applied, do they offer alternative suggestions? Or should we just cut in the entire 3 min jib shot?
Also, when is a blur dissolve deemed "inappropriate"?

Oh darn, I missed the meeting! I was thinking of petitioning to reinstate clock-wipes.
Are we still allowed to use a wavy-lines transition to get to our magenta flashback? Do you have the HSL specs for the particular shade of magenta?
cheers

There goes just about every reality show. They'll have to rely on the content now.
Uh oh.
adios,Carl

right.... back to the "if you cant solve it, dissolve it"
Any shade of Magenta will do, we are not control freaks!
There was a consensus that 2009 should be a retro year so clock wipes would fit the brief, I am working on a modern twist to the DVE cube but failing that I might just go really retro and use cuts.
I'm happy to report that in the last month or so I've used no fewer than 4 clock-wipes. A few heart wipes, and a few coloured-border multibox wipes.
If only I could easily make them all rotate and trail like in a good old GVG switcher.
All of which went to air on national network television, BTW.
Stop, you are making me feel nostalgic for all those hours wasted in dark rooms building slabs with 2 channels of DVE and having to get the front back switching spot on to make the effect disguise the cut perfectly.
I must admit I have been struggling for my"trademark" transition since dips to white were outlawed in 2005 and then its B****** offspring the Glow and whoosh was outlawed last year.
I experimented with using a 3 frame text wipe to do the trick but maybe I should have thought longer and harder about my choice of text. If I did perhaps I would still have that staff position.
Hi Ian,
ianeditz:I might just go really retro and use cuts.
This is embarassing, but what are "cuts"? I looked through the whole effect palette and I couldn't find any "cuts" anywhere.
thanks,Carl
Hapy to help, I am working on a video tutorial as I know that cuts are a tricky thing to get your head round especially for the new whippersnappers brought up on FCP.
Park up between 2 segments on your timeline and then from the effects pallette drag and drop any transitional effect to the junction and then change the duration to 0 frames and voila you have a cut. If you set the duration to 1 frame you can get a cut reminiscent of a sticky tape steenbeck join. Experiment and be happy
Nice one! If you don't mind, I'm going to do a little write up for the Tips & Tutorials section.

I dont get it.
Without a transition to link the two shots together how will the audience know they're related? And what sound effect would you put with a cut?
You guys are so avant garde!
