export files Avid>QuickTime>FCP: how to avoid need to render?

    Hi again,

When I take files (that I've exported from Avid as QuickTime files) into class, and these clips are imported into FCP (version 5.1.4 if I recall correctly), everything has to be rendered once it's on the timeline.

Is there another way I can export from Avid, so that FCP won't have to render them all?

    thanks, Malcolm

MH, One thing you might want to try is to make sure that the FCP project has the same framerate/aspect ratio as that of the avid clip you are exporting. If they are diff, then FCP wil need to render. PU

thanks PU. I'll check that this Thursday by creating a new FCP in class.  Now would it also help if I export from Avid using the Animation codec?  Malcolm

The codec will need to be the same as whatever your timeline is set to use. So, if your project is set for prores codecs, then you need to export your QTs in that same codec for them to be RT.

Welcome to the single most annoying aspect of that app (for me anyway).

Re: export files Avid>QuickTime>FCP: how to avoid need to render?

Hmm... I'm not in front of a machine with FCP on it, so I'm not sure what codecs I can set the FCP timeline to (I'm sure the list is shorter for FCP 5.1.4 than it is for FCP 6; my bad luck).

But I am here with Avid, and I can't find prores in my list of export codecs, so I guess I can't use it.

BLKDOG, do you know if there's a codec that works with both Avid MC 3.1 and FCP 5.1.4?  (so that we won't have to render everything in class)?

    Thanks, Malcolm

It all depends upon which codec you are choosing in FCP Malcolm. Threre is no codec that will work for all of FCPs settings all the time, no.

Thanks BLKDOG.  I'll try exporting out of Avid as Animation, and then tomorrow I'll see if FCP can import in this same Animation codec.

    Cheers, malcolm

Yea, just so long as the codecs are the same in both programs. Animation is supported by both FCP and avid. good luck malcolm

Great... I'll try animation.  Will check frame-rate and aspect ration too.

    cheers, Malcolm

Re: export files Avid>QuickTime>FCP: how to avoid need to render?

Here's what we did in class today...

Checked the clips in FCP... they were all (this is how I'd exported them from Avid):

Animation codec, 856x480, and the pixel aspect ratio was 'Square'

What we did was quite simple:  we changed the FCP Sequence settings to match these clip settings.  Voila, clips can now be added to the timeline without render.

    Cheers everyone, Malcolm
