Perspective text or 'Star Wars intro' :-)

    Folks,

I'm very new to all of this and hope my question hasn't been asked before.

I have recently upgraded to Media Composer 3 and wondered if receding text (as mentioned in the subject) can be created in Avid FX?

    Many thanks in advance.

Oh, I don't know... that's such a complicated thing probably requiring loads of plug ins etc.  I mean they created that effect in 1977 about 10-12 yrs before Avid was even invented.

Just kidding... just put a 3D PIP effect on the title and change the Z axis.

I would recommend promoting the title clip to 3D and using a combination of X rotate and Z perspective.

    Right.

Just adding a 3D-Warp to the title will also affect the background. So promoting the title is the way to go

Heroglyph from Prodad will do that, they have a trial to download, works with Avid.

But, the point is if you can do a Rolling Title with a Z-axis corner pin at the top why would you need to use a plug-in?

I feel like a lot of the plug-in companies probably make a killing off of people who are not able to think of how to do it within the software.  Lucky for me, I'm cheap and don't like to pay for plug-ins so I find ways to do the same effects with what I already have available.

Kenton is right, this can be done entirely within the Avid domain. Just to expand a little bit, start by lowering the X axis point of rotation from the center to the bottom of the screen. Be sure to do this first, since you want it to apply to all keyframes. Then when you X rotate, the top text disappearing will "fall back" more realistically, and you can further adjust from there with Z perspective.

Re: Perspective text or 'Star Wars intro' :-)

It seems that you can't promote a rolling title to 3D so how to you use the static title to get the rolling 3D perspective described as 'Star Wars intro'?

    Thanks

It can be done with individual screens and a combination of adjustments to X Axis, X rotation, positioning, Z perspective and down scaling the last keyframe to infinity. Obviously, multiple screens may be needed and layer stacked overlapping to achieve the completed text roll.
