One thing to note if you do use TMPGEnc.  Make sure you set the Motion Search Precision to High or Highest.  Standard is not good.  That's the only thing I had trouble with first time around.  Other than that, smooth sailing!

No, Sorenson has not been fixed.  Have you tried TMPG?  Works really well for me.  Use the "progressive" mode.  I've made dozens of DVD's from HD footage with it and great results.

FWIW TMPGenc 4.0 Expresss gives me great results for SD and interlaced 1080 but totally looses the plot on a couple of 23.976P 1080 projects here

I use it on 1080 23.976P daily.  What's going wrong?  Make sure your motion search is set to "highest".

    Here's the settings I use:

Motion search is not the issue.

On some 23.976 TMPGenc seems to loose contact with the QT reference during the encode and the last part of the programs encode just turns out to be white frames. Sometimes as much as 3 or 4 minutes of white rather than the actual program. The same QT ref encode fine in ProCoder, SS5 and Adobe Media Encoder.

On a 70 minute 1080 50i QT ref TMPGenc would randomly drop out to 3 to 6 frames of white every few minutes. Consequently I have given up on it for HD

Re: TMPGEnc 4 working very well

That's odd.  I've never had that happen yet.  What version of QT are you on?  I assume you're using DNxHD as the source?

10.4.5?  Isn't it 7.4.5 and 7.5.5 or are you from the future :)  I was hoping we wouldn't be using QT by then.

Your setup seems the same as mine.  I have two suites running it.  Maybe make sure you have the latest DNxHD codecs installed.  Other than that it must be something else interfering with it.  Can't think what it would be though.  I transcode EX1 HQ footage to DNxHD 115.

Are you using the CUDA acceleration? (I'm not).

Nope! certainly stuck in the past ....with the odd touch of brain fade it seemsHuh?  You are right 7.4.5 and 7.5.5

Yes I have the latest codecs. No I am not using CUDA acceleration. Footage originates from HDCam and HDCam SR. Worst results from QT Animation codec supplied a world class online facility, I do not know which version of QT they used. However as stated the same file works fine with all other encoders here.

(I have been a fan and user of TMPGenc since version 1.a when it did not work with QT and I had to supply it with sequential .tga's from Avid to make MPEG 2 files)

So you don't use Sorenson if you work with 24P?

I actually got some okay looking DVDs with Sorenson encoded as 23.97 FPS as opposed to 29.97 as suggested on the Michael P 24p.com site.  Also got some okay looking DVDs by encoding 23.97 bottom field first.  Has some weird motion blur but it is not as stuttery.

actually, now that i have messed around even more: a quicktime ref encouded at 23.97 fps, progressive, mpeg 2, with one i frame gop AND WITH DEINTERLACE FILTER APPLIED looks the best.  i wasn't competely happy with any of my prior DVDs but this one actually looks good.

Re: 24p Export as QT to Sorenson 5 - Stutter problem

Starting with a 1080p23.976 QT Reference from MC5.5, I've been successfully using Michael Phillips' recipe for a Sorenson Squeeze preset to produce a 23.976p file with flags for pulldown, then creating a progressive DVD in Encore (without further transcoding).  I had been using Squeeze 5, but I recently upgraded to Squeeze 8, and I can't seem to get all of the incantations right.  If I set a frame rate of 29.97, Squeeze just makes the whole thing run frame-for-frame, 20% faster.  If I set a frame rate of 23.98, I don't seem to get the pulldown flags, so Encore insists on re-transcoding. Michael, do you or does anyone else have an updated preset that works in Squeeze 8?
