A solution for importing "unsupported" files into Avid Editors

You may receive the error "The file format of "your file name" is not supported for import" when importing a media file into Avid.

To correct this error with Windows Media Player:

    1. 1.  Open your media file through one of the following options:

      • - Open Windows Media Player and navigate to File > Open.

      • - Right-click (Control click) your media file and navigate to Open With > Windows Media Player.

    2. 2.  Within Windows Media Player navigate to File > Properties.
    3. 3.  Record the frame width and frame height and continue to step 4 (Sorenson Squeeze).

To correct this error with QuickTime:

    1. 1.  Open your media file through one of the following options:

      • - Open your QuickTime Player and navigate to File > Open File.

      • - Right-click (Control click) your media file and navigate to Open With > QuickTime.

    2. 2.  Within the QuickTime Player navigate to Window > Show Movie Inspector (QT 7.2 and above) or Show Movie Info (QT 7.1 and below).

    3. 3.  Record the frame width and frame height and continue to step 4 (Sorenson Squeeze).

    1. 4.  Open Sorenson Squeeze

    2. 5.  Load your media file into Sorenson Squeeze through one of the following options:

      • - Drag and drop your media file to the Sorenson Squeeze preview window (upper right)

      • - Drag and drop your media file to the Sorenson Squeeze batch tree window (lower right)

      • - Click the Import File button (upper left)

    3. 6.  Within the format window expand the Quicktime presets and highlight the resolution closest to your media files width and height recorded in Step 3.

    4. 7.  Apply the highlighted QuickTime preset through one of the following options:

      • - Click the Apply button on the format window.

      • - Click and drag the preset to your media files name within the batch tree (lower right).

    5. 8.  Click the Squeeze button (lower right of the batch tree).

You have now produced a QuickTime movie (.mov) file which will import into Avid.

    6. 9.  Import the Quicktime into Avid.

    * If you are unsatisfied with your new QuickTime media file:

    • Ensure your Quicktime version matches the requirement of Sorenson Squeeze.

This can be found within the Sorenson Squeeze help section, under "Minimum System Requirements".

    • Use a different Quicktime compression setting

Can anyone tell me where step 4 is in this solution?  I can't find the file location either.
