Avid DVD AGONY ! Someone Please HELP !!!!

    [:'(] Hi Editors:

I've just upgraded to MC 2.8.1 from AXP 5.7.7. I've immediately gone back to testing all of the operations which we couldn't get to work for us in AXP. The MC editor is great and I've been editing smoothly on it all day. I added my MetaSync track to my MC timeline along with my chapter marks and thumnail references. I exported to the newly bundled Sorensen 4.5, which had a free upgrade patch to version 4.5.7 on the Sorensen website, and encoded to DVD NTSC Lg MPEG 2.

I brought it all into Avid DVD by Sonic along with my XML file and voila ! I see my chapter points along with my Audio and Video on the Avid DVD timeline. When I attempt to Control+Drag my chapter points up to my DVD Menu templates and drop them into the button paynes it doesn't work ! We experienced the same nightmare with Avid Xpress pro ! You see we're not getting anywhere with this 2 month odessy. No Can anyone on this forum who is using Avid DVD please confirm if this process is working for them or not. Is this application broken ? Is our system messed up ? You see, we're not learning anything here.

There is one thing we can confirm to you. We are screwed as a company if we can't output our edited sequences to standard definition DVDs. We are not a large post facility and we have to justify every cent we spend, and when we spend money on stuff we just cannot get to work, then we head downhill fairly fast ! I can tell you I'm pulling my hair out over this. I did a search on the Avid website looking to see if there was any update patch or any documentation and I could find absolutely zero about Avid DVD by Sonic ! No

As usual, we're on the eve of  another Holiday weekend and we're dead in the water once again !

    Hi Terrance:

Would the Java version I have be one which is automatically installed when I installed the Meda Composer 2.8.1 upgrade ? Smile

     Hi Terrance:

OK. I used an on line Java software version checker. See here at http://www.javatester.org/version.html . According to this version checker, I have Java Run Time 1.6.0_03 from Sun Micro-systems. Is this version of Java incompatible with Avid DVD by Sonic ?

Edit: I checked out the thread you listed and they were using much earlier versions. i.e. 1.3.x and 1.4.x Do I have to roll back my Java ? How would I do that ? I don't recall ever seeing an uninstaller for this software. (??)

Re: Avid DVD AGONY ! Someone Please HELP ! UPDATE

     Hi Editors:

I contacted Avid today and spoke with Mr. Tony Hamwey who is head of Tech Support in Tewksburry regarding what I consider to be a possible program bug with the Avid DVD application. A case number ticket has been issued. Avid tech support specialist Haden Rowland is firing up a Media Composer system at Avid and is investigating wether he can replicate the malfunction with chapter Control+Drag and drop I have been experiencing. I have received excellent courtesy assistance from Avid by contacting them on this issue thus far and I have at least some hope now that I will discover whether I am the malfunction, my system, or the software itself. This is nearly a three month problem which began with AXP and has carried over to my MC upgrade.

Re: Avid DVD AGONY ! Someone Please HELP !!!!

Also note there are two ways documented to set up chapter marking on a meta track, one of which works and one of which does not.  This is also discussed in an ancient thread here somewhere.

If you've set your chapters marks as just that - marks like  index markers - you will have problems.

You need to set the chapter marks like clips.  That is, add the chapter mark "clip" from the bin to a span of the metadata track bounded by in- / out-points.  This way works with Avid DVD by Sonic and DVDit! 6

NOTE: both are documented, but I've forgotten in which manuals.  You may need to search your online help manual set to find them both (which is how I found the fix to this problem way back when...).

    Hi wmcole:

If you could put your solution in writing, then I would be glad to pass this information along to the proper Avid techs. So far, we have been unable to resolve the problem. You could send me a personal message if you want. Make the proceedure list as detailed as you can remember.

    Thanks, Yes

Re: Avid DVD AGONY ! Someone Please HELP !!!!

It is already documented in Avid official documentation so I don't know what else you expect from them but RTFM.

I am really busting it, balls to the wall, work-wise at present and do not have time to re-do my document search, or forum search for you.  If it is really as big an issue as you say, you should not have difficulty  searching ont "MetaSynch", "DVD Chapters"  etc. in your online help library from the install disk set or here on the forum.

Also, at the time I posted the page and procedure reference for this "fix" in the forum, I was told that it would be added to the Knowledge Base, but I can not confirm that happened.

If, however, you are unable to do this research on your own, i will be happy to work with you on a consultant basis when my schedule is clear upon my return from NAB (4/22/08).  If interested send me private email, and I will send you my consulting rates and contract for doing this forum and documentation search (again) for you.
