No, it is you who are not understanding. I completely sympathize with your situation as I have done the same thing in the past. However, in the end, this is totally on you. Yes, it's taken Avid a while to fix this bug however, I defy you to send me any email, post or announcement that told you which release would include this fix. I know that Marianna never gave Any indication that the fix was in any specific release. Saying that it's being worked on is not a promise of inclusion anywhere.

The point here is that, though you EXPECTED the fix, it was really your responsibility to check if that was the only reason you were plunking down $85. If that was the case, then no one is to blame for "wasting" your $85 but you. You should have checked before purchasing. If the update added other features and stability (which they did) then the $85 wasn't wasted.

BLKDOG, I think what he is saying was that he didn't upgrade in the hopes of there being a fix (because there was nothing to fix regarding it).  He paid for an update which INTRODUCED the problem in the first place.  There was no readme file saying "if you upgrade to this version, then there will be this particular audio problem."

Thanks Sandman. If that's the case then there is a disconnect. I took the first post to mean that he paid for the update in the hopes that the issue was fixed. If he was simply waiting for a fix, then he would not be out $85.

BTW...what update was ever $85? We had two that were $49 and one that was $149.

Thanks for making that clear, Sandman.  I tried, but apparently didn't succeed.

And, yes, you are correct that it was a $49.99 upgrade.  I had it in my mind that it was $85 so I went way back and looked at old receipts.  Yeah, that does take a little of the sting off, but this is more a matter of principle.

You said "I defy you to send me any email, post or announcement that told you which release would include this fix. I know that Marianna never gave Any indication that the fix was in any specific release."  I did find the old posts (all with new addresses).  And this is what Marianna wrote about this situation on May 23rd of 2007:

"QA says there is a fix coming soon and says it has to do with using the device as a transcoder. It's difficult to tell from the posts above if that is how some of you  are using the devices, or whether tyou are using the decks as just decks, but QA can reproduce the issue, and a fix is coming soon which will solve their problems. From what I can gather - the fix will be in June."

    http://community.avid.com/forums/p/41275/234142.aspx#234142

From that, I made assumptions, and I don't think I was wrong in doing so.  Her post was in May and she said the fix would be in June, which, most likely meant the next release,  It wasn't there.  There was never a fix.  My guess is that this situation was abandoned knowing that it would soon be a discontinued application.  Will someone please assure me that the same problems won't be present in MC?

No...she said from what she can GATHER the fix will be in June. She never promised anything. It is still up to you to check before you purchase an upgrade if your only reason for upgrading is for that fix. If you upgraded for other reasons, then your $50 wasn't wasted.

I do have to say that Marianna has a strict policy against naming any dates and this may be one example why.  This was never abandoned after it was found last year. SQA did have a difficult time reproducing the issue and I worked with them for quite a long time before it was finally nailed down late last year.

Bottom line is, no matter what you are told, if you're spending your money, it is your responsibility to make sure you are getting what you are paying for.

We are testing this workflow for the next release. If it gets included in the Gold version, I will post it here. You will also be able to find it in the Read Me files released prior to the application.

This is getting old.  Now it's down to symantics.  No, she never promised anything, but she did give the impression (quite clearly) that the fix would come soon, and, most likely, in the next release which she said was likely less than a month away (June of 2007).

"It is still up to you to check before you purchase an upgrade if your only reason for upgrading is for that fix. If you upgraded for other reasons, then your $50 wasn't wasted."

You still are not understanding.  I did not purchase the upgrade for a fix.  I had no problems before I purchased and installed the upgrade.  I purchased the upgrade (to 5.6) for all the new added features such as full screen playback.  It was this upgrade where the problem first appeared.  I was never able to take advantage of these new cool features because the software did not work for me.  And, I'm not alone.  So, yes, my $50 was wasted.

"Bottom line is, no matter what you are told, if you're spending your money, it is your responsibility to make sure you are getting what you are paying for."

Believe me, if the readme even hinted that the software was flawed and wouldn't work for me, I would not have made the purchase.

Blkdog, I've said it before and I will say it again.  I appreciate your vast knowledge and your fantastic contributions to this forum, and I hold you in high regard.  There have been numerous times where your posts have helped me and expanded my knowledge of the product.  I do not want to get into a shouting match with you about this.  I'm just frustrated and don't understand why you can't see why.

Re: So, since I paid for an upgrade I could never use...

I get it now. When you started this thread, you implied that the new upgrade made your $50 a waste. What you are saying now was that it was a waste in the first place because you couldn't use it. If that's the case, then I am still confused as to how Marianna's post caused you to purchase an upgrade. Anyway, If you have a problem like this with an Avid upgrade, I would have gotten a refund long before now. It's just hard to follow your logic when you are only now bringing this up. We could have helped you back when you purchased.

So, asking that your upgrade to 5.6 way back when have some relevance to the current pricing is really out of the ballpark.

Re: So, since I paid for an upgrade I could never use...

I'm sorry for the confusion.  Marianna's post never prompted me to purchase an upgrade.  Marianna's post just gave me hope that a new release with the fix for the upgrade that I purchased was in the works.

No, I never asked for my money back as I had faith (especially with the popularity of the original posts on this subject and the number of people that were having the exact same problem) that the problem would be fixed. Yeah, perhaps my patience and faith was dumb.  Again, it isn't about the 50 bucks.  It's about principle.

By the way, I find it interesting that we both apparently joined this forum on 10-13-2005.

    Hi,

That was the day Avid put in the new forums, which couldn't carry over our actual join dates.  Anyone who registered under the old forums has 13 Oct 2005 as their join date.

    good luck,

Yeah, a lot of us joined then.

So please just bear with me. The fix IS in the works, it SHOULD be out soon so I don't see what has changed for you...is it that the fix won't be included for 'Pro? That it will be in MC instead? No one could have predicted that. In the time that the bug was found and replicated, Avid has gotten an entirely new structure from the top down. For things to get better, some sacrifices had to be made. It's unfortunate that 'Pro is gone but you can't beat the upgrade price to a piece of great software that, only last month, was $4995.

Agree.  Although the MC upgrade from AXP for $495 is a good deal I can't see spending that cash for yet another upgrade with the same problems as AXP...audio pass through, real support for JVC HDV for more frame rates besides just..."Native HDV support for 1080i at 59.94, 50 fps; 1080p; 720p at 29.976 fps."  There are a lot of JVC HD100/250 cameras out there dying for full support from Avid.

Some of these problems have been on the "high priority" fix list for about two years now.  Bring on the "new thinking" so I can comfortably plunk down my 495 clams for MC.

This sounds like a glass half empty/half full argument.  Isn't the real point here that for the cost of a major upgrade you're acquiring way more added features than any previous Xpress major upgrade provided?  For me, Spectramatte and full timewarp makes it more than worthwhile, not to mention 10-bit compression rates.

I don't use HDV, and if I did it may be more of an issue that 720 HDV support in 50 Hz rates is apparently so poor.  I don't require audio punch through often, but I have a workaround that works for me.  I do require a fast efficient NLE, and XP gets me 80+% there.  I look forward to MC-soft getting me over 90%.

If it ever gets to 100% Avid can stop development.

There's always a little irritance forking out cash for something not used but IMHO the upgrades for AXP have been for me quite unbelievably cheap. The upgrade(s) cost cheaper than some Anti-virus programs. In today's markets I feel that the new MC price is very reasonable and the recent responses by Avid to the forum activity shows that they are VERY committed. It's all positive.

I'm certainly glad I didn't have to pay hefty upgrade prices like other editing software. And the dongle has always allowed me to have 4.6 running legally on more than one machine without the hassle of activation/deactivation. One licence, a laptop, a fixed workstation with a setup that works for my needs and an experimental machine. Couldn't be better really.

As long as Avid keeps the dongle (please do) then I can test an upgrade without burning my bridges.

The real point here is that those added features mean nothing for me if Avid, after 2 years plus, still does not fully support JVC HDV1.  I've hung in and updated and hoped for support because I have read all the teasers along the way..."we're working on it, it's high priority, might make it into the next release, etc".  No more Avid string along for me.  I can't justify plunking down $495 just to start waiting and hoping all over again.  When the "new thinking" fully kicks in please, someone, send me an email.  I'll be more than willing then to jump into MC.
