    How to set pull down?

I'm using a Sony PMW-EX1 camera shooting in SP 1080/24P mode. Since Avid does not currently support 35Mbps VBR, I'm shooting at 25Mbps CBR. So when I import the .MXF files into Avid, I have to create a 1080/60i project so that Avid can import the MXF files in. I read somewhere that I can set the pull down to 3:2 to get a 24P. What I'm not clear is, where do I set the pull down and when? Do I set the pull in the project that I'm working on or only during when I'm ready to export the sequence? I guess what I'm trying to say is when does the footage become 24P. Is it when the sequence is exported or when the project is set to 3:2 pulld own?

Any suggestion? Perhaps PMW-EX1 workflow is still not very well known.

Re: How to set pull down?

The Avid systems don't support pulldown removal from file based camera formats. The HQ mode of the camera is a native 23.976 format without pulldown which would work in a 1080p/23.976 project type once the native support is added. There is a windows based tool that allows for a transcode to DNxHD. I can't remember the name of it right now.

Is that Raylight you're thinking of Michael?

No it isn't. The MXFX tool is a great tool that allows pulldown removal, uprez, noise reduction, frame rate conversion etc, for P2 based formats. This one was made by someone at USC. I need to track it down.

Sorry I don't mean to be obtuse. I know Raylight is an MXFX tool so I was wondering how this differs from what you are wanting to do:

Re: How to set pull down?

Bob Russo has been following these tools better than me so I will have to ask him to join in on the thread. MXFX only works with MXF wrapped DVCPRO media whereas this camera is a long GOP MPEG format. So the decode, and recreation is a different process.

    Ah. I get it now.

Bob showed us the Raylight encoder which is why I was interested in your take.
